Iwo Jima

Today is the anniversary of the iconic photo by Joe Rosenthal of the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribashi on Iwo Jima. The fighting on the island actually started four days earlier on February 19th. The story of this battle is something every high school student should have to learn before they are allowed to graduate.

Today is marked by many as the anniversary of the iconic photo by Joe Rosenthal of raising of the American flag on Mount Suribashi on Iwo Jima but the fighting on the island actually started four days earlier on February 19th. The story of this battle is something every high school student should have to learn before they are allowed to graduate.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- These are the US servicemen killed in the Kabul airport attack.

- Amazon urges FCC to deny SpaceX's plan for second generation Starlink. While the overall impression is Elon Musk is getting things done while Jeff Bezos just protests and cries foul - in this case Amazon may have a point.

- Libertarians correctly predicted the Afghanistan fiasco. (HT Stephen Landry)

- Sirhan Sirhan parole board approved his release. Let's hope the Governor rejects the recommendation. People forget but Sirhan was the original Islamic terrorist in this country - killing "Bobby" over Israel's victory in the Six Days War and America's support of Israel.

- Because that's all they seem to care about.

- How to bring New York City's refugees back home. Good points but many will never return and the healing won't really begin until NYC has a Mayor who's not a complete doofus.

- Great conversation between Shane Parrish and Naval Ravikant. Well worth the two hours of your time if you've never heard it (or if you have - to bask in the wisdom a second, third, or more times).

- Speaking of Naval - his his list of recommended reading (some great books on this list)

Ted Williams

68-years ago today, Ted Williams reported for duty in the Korean War as a Marine Corps fighter pilot.

It would be Williams second tour of military duty after serving his country in WWII as well.

Williams is in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Marine Corps Hall of Fame and the Fishing Hall of Fame.

Happy 244th Marines

Today is the 244th birthday for the United States Marine Corps.  In honor of the Marines - here's my favorite Ronald Reagan quote:
"Some people live their entire lifetime and wonder if they ever made a difference to the world. Marines don't have that problem." -- January 1995

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Ultimate Spinach would be a good name for a new cryptocurrency or a new strain of medical marijuana... They don't make athletes like they used to... Do female centaurs wear bras? Now that I've put that image in your head... Kids today don't know some of the simple pleasures in life - like rocking on through to Electric Avenue... They say that Saint Augustine did something very bad as a youth and it was his guilt that turned him to Christianity. There's no way though that what he did was worse than the re-make of Murder on the Orient Express... For the record I did not order the code red. You're goddamn right I didn't... "A million Marines could not take Tawara in a 100-years," a Japanese Admiral shortly before the US Marines took Tawara in three days... According to the Bible, Noah's Ark would have been about half the size of the Titanic. Good thing Noah didn't hit any icebergs...

George Roy Hill

George Roy Hill is remembered most for being one of the great directors of the past 60-years but what sparked interest in me was a little known fact about the man. Hill flew planes for the US Marines in both World War II and in Korea - just like the great Ted Williams.

Unlike Williams who flew fighter planes in both conflicts - Hill first flew transport planes in WWII and then fighters in Korea. Still that's an accomplishment that's worthy of a little bragging. However, self promotion was never something George Roy Hill was interested in which in itself is another reason to admire the man.

And I still say that Slap Shot is the best sports movie ever made. Here's what I consider the Top 5 Movies by George Roy Hill.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Victor Davis Hanson on the new nihilism

- Charles Barkley on Jussie Smollett (Smollett is a joke and it is healthy to laugh at him)

- I would absolutely give up a flying car to have one of these instead

- How to walk 100.000 steps in one day. I think I might take up that challenge - it works out to 41+ miles which is a hike no matter how you slice it.

- Heh Heh

- Plutonium

- To the Moon in 2019!

- Sciline - we should all remember
