I remember the New Jersey coming over the horizon. Impressive! We had been making little holes in the dirt with our 5" guns. Suddenly, Jersey was shaking up a city block with their 16" rounds.
Can't forget. We (USS VIRGINIA) were a mile or so off the coast. Could hear the blast even from that distance. We sent about 20 guys in to help with recovery effort. Only thing we could do on the ship was donate blood.
Remember the New Jersey opened fire and how power that seemed but at the same time how much more we wanted those animals punished. Was still in high school and full of piss and vinegar.
Reagan had the New Jersey open fire with its 16 inch guns after that, perhaps the last time a battleship did that I am guessing.
