"Biden is remaining popular within his base, which now includes the Taliban." - Scott Adams

"We will stay until the mission is done." - George W. Bush

"Inspiration is perishable, act on it immediately." - Naval Ravikant

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

For all the angst about the Celtics losing Gordon Haywood - Las Vegas still has Boston tied for the third-best odds to win the NBA East (tied with Miami but behind Milwaukee and Brooklyn)... Velvet Yoda would be a good name for an Elvis cover band... Back when men were men... Yesterday was the anniversary of Edwin Hubble's discovery in 1924 that the Andromeda "nebula" was actually another galaxy outside of the Milky Way. The ramifications were as big as Galileo saying the Earth was not the center of our solar system... There was an old lady who swallowed a horse. - She's dead, of course... When's the last time you heard anyone bring up George W. Bush? You certainly don't see those "George W - miss me yet?" billboards. It's like his 8-years in office have been washed away with only John Roberts as the Chief Justice as his only "accomplishment"... Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get any stranger - Mysterious monolith found among Utah rocks. The first step to making "contact?" Or just perhaps a rogue art project?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not for nothing but funny how you never see those "George W - Miss Me Yet?" signs and memes anymore... The government should not have the "keys" to your phone any more than the government should have keys to your home... 01360 is the Zip Code for Satan's Kingdom - seriously... Put me in the camp of people who are happy the Boston Celtics didn't make any deals on Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline. It is much better to make no deal than a bad deal and besides this team has both good talent and chemistry. There was no reason to mess with that just to make a splash... How can you not like Huey Lewis?... I'm also boycotting any "where will Tom Brady play next season" stories. Nobody knows anything. Just speculation that's not worth the time or effort... The lawsuits against SpaceX for its Starlink satellite constellations is worth watching. Lawsuits will be filled with the FCC and with the International Court of Justice arguing the dangers of the "light pollution" and threat of rampant "space junk" has merit. Will be interesting to monitor...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for David Ortiz. The details out of the Dominican Republic are still pretty hazy and the full story may never come out. The important thing right now is that Big Papi get better... This still makes me laugh... If a monogamy gene could be isolated in humans - could future prenup agreements require that gene be activated prior to marriage?... "The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." - Marcus Aurelius... I would really like to own a copy of this painting (and yes I'm going to hell)... "Too often we judge other groups by their worst examples while judging ourselves by our best intentions." - George W. Bush... Bruins win and force a Game 7 in Boston. I know what I'll be watching Wednesday night. Go Bruins!!!..

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Amazon's eye for sports could shatter TV as we know it. Good!

- Love, Happiness, and Time. Interesting and gratifying way to view the world.

- Interesting - if the American Dream is for children to do better financially than their parents then the American Dream is not only alive and well it's thriving! Long read but worth it!

- Christopher Buckley with an excellent remembrance of George HW Bush (aka the Vishnu)

- A guide to tipping in the US. Agree 100% with the $1 per drink at a bar suggestion. In most of the places I go that works out to more than 20% but it's worth it for the shit they let me get away with or for what they have to put up with (insert smiley face emoticon here).

- Marriott had a data breach that could effect 500 million people. That's more more the population of the US.

- If this doesn't make you tear up even just a little - I serious don't want to know you.

George HW Bush

George Herbert Walker Bush has passed away at age 94. He was a true gentleman of great character who spent much of his life in service to his country whether it be in uniform as a Navy combat pilot during World War II or in various government or elected positions culminating with his service as the 41st President of the United States.

His passing comes just 8 months after the death of his beloved wife of 73 years Barbara Bush. The photo to the left is of George and Barbara on their wedding day.

As a simple example of how great a person George HW Bush was - five years ago he shaved his head in support of the son of a secret service agent battling cancer. It should be noted that George and Barbara lost their first daughter Robin to childhood leukemia.

Many of the articles you will read today will speak about 41 as a one term President. If those articles do not mention H. Ross Perot you can be sure that you are reading an article from an outlet that is biased or incompetent. Perot's entry into the 1992 election as a third-party candidate is what cost Bush re-election.

Perot won almost 19% of the popular vote that year (the most ever by a modern third-party candidate). So any eulogies that ignore that piece of history should make you think twice about ever trusting that media outlet again.

His feelings about Perot aside, Bush was gracious and classy in defeat as this note to Bill Clinton shows.

HBO has an excellent documentary on the life of George HW Bush named simply 41. The documentary is completely narrated by 41 and goes through every aspect of his life - from childhood to the Presidency. When Perot is mentioned you can hear that hatred still for the man who Bush blames for not having a second term as President. Perhaps the only person Bush had those feelings about.

George HW Bush and George W Bush, of course, were just the second father-son to hold the office of President. They joined John and John Quincy Adams in that rare accomplishment.

I think history will look very favorably on George HW Bush and on his Presidency.

One of my favorite what-ifs in history is the fact that before picking Dan Quayle as his Vice President, Bush briefly considered giving that slot to Clint Eastwood instead. That's 100% true. Can you imagine how history would have been different if that happened?

Rest in peace you great and honorable man. Barbara is waiting for you.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Geothermal heat source seems to be melting Antarctica from below.

- Heh Heh

- Lockheed Martin has started building NASA's X-59 experimental supersonic jet. Cool but why is NASA in the jet business? Isn't their purview space? Is this jet to be part of the new Space Force?

- The 70's were such a more sophisticated time

- This is such a good story. Now do a follow-up on the cadet who gave Bush a chest bump upon graduation.

- Heh Heh

- Started with Antarctic ice - let's end with Arctic ice. And for the record I am not a climate change denier. I am just not a fan of bad or incomplete science.

Barbara Bush

George and Barbara Bush's wedding photo in 1945.

- Statement from President George W Bush on the passing of his mother.

- Statement from President and Mrs. Obama on the passing of Barbara Bush.

- A reminder on the type of person Barbara Bush was.

- General Chuck Yeager has a couple of anecdotes on how fine a person and how down to earth Barbara Bush was.

- Five years ago George HW Bush shaved his head in support of the son of a secret service agent. It should be remembered that George and Barbara lost their first daughter Robin to childhood leukemia. Now after 73-years of marriage George has lost the love of his life. Reportedly he was holding her hand as she passed.

My prayers are with George HW Bush and the rest of the Bush family.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Beware the ides of June!!!... If I were an MLB player my walk-up music would be God Bless America - just to see who stands... I absolutely love this gesture to honor the passing of Adam West... "Too often, we judge other groups by their worst examples while judging ourselves by our best intentions." - George W. Bush. Something to keep in mind while cruising the Internets these days... See what I mean... I forget - what came first? Bill Cosby as rapist or Bill Cosby as pitchman for New Coke?...  I heard a Beastie Boys song on a classic rock station the other day. Man am I fucking old... Time for another MOAB drop I guess... Whenever you see people complain that Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed by the NFL just remember that on March 1st he opted out of a contract with the 49ers that would have paid him millions. He OPTED OUT of his contract...

George W. Bush

From the moment he left office, I have long said that history was going to be kind to George W. Bush. And I continue to see no reason to doubt my prediction.

Most people don't know or want to acknowledge just how damn smart George W was and is!

In performance of his duties of President, George W. was closer to Ronald Reagan than his own father. Both Reagan an Bush were called "cowboys" by a mocking media but both Presidents embraced the title as a compliment not an insult.

Nobody did more to end the threat of world communism than Ronald Reagan. Nbody has done more to stem the spread of HIV in Africa than George W. Bush - yet neither was even considered for a Nobel Peace Prize (which are worthless awards at this point).

Yes indeed - history will be very kind to George W. Bush. Both for his accomplishments in office and in comparison to those who followed him in the Office of President.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

"Not now Gisele - I have a concussion!" Come on - who among us hasn't used that excuse to get out of sex with a supermodel?... George W just wants to say "hey!"... My iPhone has started identifying some unknown calls as "Scam Likely" which I love! Also Scam Likely was my porn name... It's been 25-years since Larry Bird last played for the Celtics. Damn I feel old... Such a great time waster... If you think of it Sam and Frodo basically through-hiked the distance of the Appalachian Trail to get the ring from the Shire to Mount Doom...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Fire Grilled Turtles - band name or hipster entree?... Impressive!... Does it bother anyone else that nobody in the press seemed to ask where Syria got the poison gas in the first place? Didn't George W. Bush say that Iraq sent some of theirs into Syria to avoid inspectors? Why isn't that a bigger story?... Heh heh... Cult of Inhibitions - band name or all-inclusive resort?... This is going to put Match.com out of business... Just a reminder that one of the reasons the Broncos ran Josh McDaniels out of Denver was because he traded clubhouse cancer Jay Cutler... Sex Melon - band name or hipster cocktail?... I love the fact that Steelers fans have to live with the fact that Tim Tebow beat them in the playoffs...

Happy Birthday Ralphie

Today is Ralph Nader's 83rd birthday and I for one would like to wish him a happy birthday and thank him once again for taking those votes away from Al Gore in the 2000 election. Nader got 3% of the vote nation-wide and who knows how many votes in the closely contested (to put it mildly) Florida vote.

Thanks Ralphie. Don't hold your breath for a birthday card from Al Gore though.
