Recording of Chuck Yeager's Final Flight in the X-1A

  1. I've never seen that before. What a man. I only realised towards the end he didn't have an ejection seat.

  2. Think the X-1 (which Yeager broke the sound barrier in) and later the X-1A (which he got up to 2.44 Mach) had the design flaw that they had razor thin wings that could slice a pilot in half if he tried to eject.

    So he could have ejected but he also could have put a gun to his temple too.
