Hemingway's Top 5 Books

Today would have been Papa's 116th birthday. May have a drink or two in his honor today. Here's what I consider my 5 favorite Hemingway books.

1. The Old Man and the Sea
2. A Moveable Feast
3. The Sun Also Rises
4. By Lines (Journalism for the Toronto Star)
5. To Have and Have Not

  1. The only Hemingway I have read is To Have and Have Not. Frankly, the movie versions were better, as I hated the title character. Everyone has seen the Bogart version, but have you seen the one with John Garfield?

I really need to read The Sun Also Rises. I can't help feeling that Hemingway will be like Picasso is to me, overrated and disappointing. I hope not.

  2. I have not seen the John Garfield version.

Hemingway viewed via today's prism comes off as bit of a dick. It's amusing to me that Bogart may have actually been more of a man's man than Hemingway.

I got into Hemingway in high school and can still re-read some of his stuff. At the same time I got into Hemingway - I also got into Hunter S Thompson who I now find very overrated and disappointing.

Whatever you do - do not watch the HBO move Hemingway and Gellhorn. Beyond awful
