Miscellaneous Baseball Thoughts

OK - the Red Sox have the Yankees lead down to 8 games. If they can get that down to 5 games by the end of August - then the Sox still have a chance of overtaking the Yankees in September (they play 6 head-to-head games in September). Hey - I'm an optimist... It should be noted that Carlos Delgado is hitting exactly his weight - .230... I still say that Hideki Matsui is the MVP of this year's Yankees team... Brett Boone just needs 12 more at bats to kick in his 2005 option that will pay him $9.0 million... Barry Bonds leads the NL in batting with his .358 mark but it is possible that Mark Loretta will get the title because Bonds won't have enough official at bats to qualify for the title because of all of the intentional walks... Todd Helton is very quietly having another fine year. He is hitting .328 with 26 HR and 71 RBI and before you shout "Coors Field" - please note that he is hitting .335 at home and .321 on the road... 53-years ago today - "little person" Eddie Gaedel was sent up to hit for the Browns. Gaedel was walked in hs only at bat giving him a career OBP of 1.000. Two days later in a clear move of discrimination - baseball bans Gaedel and "little people" from the game. A "little person" has not made it back to the majors since (unless you count David Eckstein)...
