Waltzing Matilda and ANZAC Day

Today is ANZAC Day and that means The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Perhaps the saddest and most poignant song my ears have ever heard.

  1. Lots from that war. The Newfoundland regiment couldn't "go over the top" at the Somme because the trenches were choked with the dead and wounded. They had to come out of their trenches 200 yards behind the lines and were cut to pieces by German machine guns. Newfoundland never recovered from the loss of so many of her sons that day.

But if anyone wrote a song about them, I haven't heard it.

But yeah - this is a powerful song.
