We are at the dawn of a great new age in medical treatment - the age of stem cell therapies.
Here's a good article describing how researchers are "reprogramming" adult bone and fat cells into stem cells. One thing that I would have liked to have see elaborated on is why embryonic stem cells "cannot be used to treat damaged tissues because of their tumour forming capacity." Back in the day embryonic stem cells were the big controversy about stem cell therapies. Now it turns out they can't be used anyway?
Here's another article on how stem cell therapies have impacted heart disease treatments. In the future heart transplants will be greatly reduced or eliminated thanks to treatments that repair or regenerate the existing heart tissue.
Awesome! As Glenn Reynolds would say "Faster please!"
