Band Played Waltzing Matilda and ANZAC Day

Today is ANZAC Day and that means The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Perhaps the saddest and most poignant song my ears have ever heard.

  1. It is the saddest song I have ever heard. I listen to it from time to time and then post Dover Beach again.

  2. I agree - the song always gets me. And I think this may be the best version.

  3. Thanks Chris, it is a very special day for me. Both my grandfathers were there and both were wounded on the 25th.
They both ended up in the Western front and were wounded again several times. One came back minus an arm and part of a leg and the other had 3 holes through him. They both lived until the early 70's and had a huge impact on my life. I am very lucky to be here. A great song

  4. Mick - sorry about your grandfathers. Growing up Irish the Clancy Brothers held a special place in my home. As said before this song always brings a tear to my eye. When you know the history the line like "lambs to the slaughter" doesn't begin to give what happened justice.

  5. I must admit I hadn't heard of the Clancy Brothers until now and I assumed it was Eric Bogle doing the singing. Bogle is the author and a Scot who moved to Australia.
I think you are right, Liam Clancy's version is more emotive than the original.
