Madison $5,000 Bill

Who knew? The US used to have a $5,000 bill with James Madison on it. It was issued between 1928 and 1934.

There have been larger denomination bills such as the $10,000 bill and the $100,000 bill but the $5,000 bill peaked my interest as it is mentioned in Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye which is currently one of the books I'm reading.

  1. Personally, I love the crazy low serial number on the example you posted.

  2. I think there were only 300-500 ever printed. If you have one today they would easily be worth 6-times the face value.

So if anyone out there is wondering what to get Chris for his birthday...
