Ask Not

"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." - John F. Kennedy

I used to think that phrase from JFK's Inaugural Address was the height of patriotism but as I've gotten older I no longer agree. What part of liberty does doing things for the government entail? What part of capitalism?

If you think about it the "Ask Not" quote easily could be a slogan for the Chinese Communist Party. Almost fits like a glove.

  1. I agree, everyone thought it was pretty profound in the day, it is trite at best.
How did the service members going to Vietnam help this country I wonder? They had no choice mostly, as the draft was in full swing (Uncle Sam didn't ask, he TOLD you you were going).

  2. Well, your country and the government are not synonymous; quite the contrary, in fact. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your country is to oppose its government.

  3. I agree that TODAY your country and your government are not synonymous but back when JFK said that - I believe most people would have said they were.
