Friendly's was a place you grew up with (breakfast a specialty) and after St Patty's Day Parade it was always our last stop. The video did get one thing right - those Fribbles were delicious.
Back in the early 60's I lived in the New York area and my Boy Scout troop would make annual ski trips to Vermont. On the way back we always stopped at a Friendly's (in Northampton, maybe) for their iconic shake. But it wasn't called a Fribble then, it was an "Awful-Awful" ("awful big - awful good!"). I believe it was made with melted ice cream and had the consistency of volcanic lava. Haven't tried the contemporary version and I don't think I want to -- I'll just live with the memory . . .
Enjoyed the new experience of Friendly's when we moved to MA upon military retirement. Near the NH line and did most shopping and eating in tax-free NH. At a lot of lunches at Friendly's and took a lot ice cream home; we enjoyed the place. But six years of MA was more than enough so we moved to FL. Discovered a Friendly's here (FL) later and went there a couple of times. Not great. Can't describe it other than to say it was FL, not Friendly's. Atmosphere was different and not to our liking. Twice was it for us.
They were iconic. Awful food, but iconic. If you ever went to Cabots (Newtonville) you would never go to a Friendly’s again.
