E.B. White

Today would have been E.B. White's 121st birthday.

  1. As a youth, I worked in an old hardware store on Main Street in Ellsworth Maine. An older gentleman wearing a fedora, and dressed in work shirt and bib overalls with an old sport jacket on top, would come in once every week or two for odds and ends. He was reserved and quiet, but with a ready smile, and I came to look forward to his visits. I learned later that my customer was E.B.White, up from his salt-water farm. I used his essay on battling ants from "One Man's Meat" as my junior speaking piece in high school.

  2. E.B. White is perhaps the most underrated of great American authors.

And from all I've read (including your first hand experience) he seemed a really nice guy to boot.
