Morgan Housel uses the Vanderbilt's as examples to explain his difference between being rich and being wealthy. Personally, I've always liked this definition of being rich from the author of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:
"I am indeed rich, since my income is superior to my expenses, and my expense is equal to my wishes." - Edward Gibbon
Being rich is being able to take care of yourself. Being wealthy means your children and their children will also have the same amount of money or more - Shaquille O'Neal
