Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- It's time to affirm that character is greater than color. Agree but wasn't reverse discrimination already ruled illegal by the Supreme Court?

- Sponsoring an immigrant has financial repercussions. And the bills are coming due.

- Kevin Kelly: The Oil and Water Planet. Some may see this as an anti-oil post but I view it as a pro nuclear power argument. Water is for drinking.

- Prediction Markets are (Obviously) Gambling.

  1. Re quotas: The devil has been in the details. In University of California v. Bakke (1978), Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. carved out a loophole. His position was that quotas were illegal, but that race could be considered in order to achieve a diverse student body. Powell’s view, much to the disappointment of many, survived in the Supreme Court cases of Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger much later; i.e., no quotas but preferences could be allowed to achieve diversity. It was a scam. Only recently have we seen the Supreme Court seriously attacking quotas, but attention will always have to be directed at any devious bureaucratic methods used to hide them.

  2. Was thinking of the Bakke case but was unaware of the loophole (probably because I was so young when it happened) :)
