Including today there are 56 days until the Patriots take on the Steelers in their first game of the 2019 NFL season.

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Clemson's C.J. Spiller was the only player in Div 1-A college football to score a touchdown in every single game this season... Awesome! I really got a good chuckle out of that... Interesting - Meyer resigns, bettors jump on Gators in Sugar Bowl. The thinking is that the Gators will be pumped for Meyer's last game as coach. They won't want to let their coach down. The most interesting man in the world thinks this is a good bet... Tweet of the Day:

Red Sox Magic Number



It is fitting that on the day that Andre Tippett is enshrined in the Football Hall of Fame that the Red Sox should cut their magic number to clinch the AL East to 56. The same number that I expect the Patriots to retire in Tippett's honor.

Sure it may be hubris to have a magic number count for a team currently in second place but I just don't see Tampa Bay holding onto their lead. By the end of August they will be in second or possibly third place.

Red Sox Magic Number - 56

The Red Sox magic number keeps going down and now it stands at 56.

Right now I associate the number 56 and the Red Sox with pitcher Craig Hansen. I have to wonder if Hansen will be with the Red Sox much longer though. He was a fireballing closer out of St. John's University but since he was represented by Scott Boras instead of being a top pick - he dropped down to the Red Sox at the 26th pick in the first round. Now it seems (according to Peter Gammons) that Scott Boras and his "experts" fooled around with the kid's delivery and somehow managed to take the fire out of the fireballer's delivery. I would not be surprised if Hansen was trade bait for the trade deadline.

Overall, though, when a New England sports fan thinks of the number 56 - probably the name that jumps to mind is Andre Tippett - the great linebacker for the New England Patriots. Tippett played 12 seasons for the Pats and if it wasn't for the fact that he played at the same time as Lawrence Taylor - Tippett would have been a shoe-in for the Football Hall of Fame.
