Habits

I whole heartly endorse the James Clear book Atomic Habits. Instinctually I knew it was best to develop good habits and shed bad ones. On of the best pieces of advice I ever received was from a friend in high school who said that if you did something for 21 days straight it became a habit. I still believe that's true.

A few years ago I did a little experiment where I took some of my worse habits and gave each up for a month. I went without alcohol, then playing Keno, then smoking pot. then caffeine, and finally porn,  I was successful in giving each up for the month except porn (which I'm not sure says more about me or men in general). I did find that my use of all these were greatly reduced and many eliminated completely for long stretches.

As far as cable TV, newspapers, or network news - I gave them up decades ago and don't miss them in the least. If any of these are one of your "crutches" - try giving them up for a month. You may find you do better without them.

Atomic Habits by James Clear

One of my most gifted books. I think everyone could benefit from reading this book. (Graphic via)

Atomic Habits

Reminded that James Clear's great book Atomic Habits came out five years ago today.

One of those books I recommend everyone should read. In fact I should probably find my copy to give it a re-read.

Pat Riley on the Remarkable Power of Getting 1% Better

James Clear with an except from Atomic Habits on Pat Riley and his CBE (Career Best Effort) program.

Reading that I kept wondering if CBE is now kept somewhere as an advanced performance metric? If not - why not? It would seem to be as useful a tool to basketball as WAR (Wins Above Replacement) was to baseball.

Atomic Habits

"The people with the best self-control are typically the ones who need to use it the least. It's easier to practice self-restraint when you don't have to use it very often. So, yes, perseverance, grit, and willpower are essential to success, but the way to improve these qualities is not by wishing you were a more disciplined person, but by creating a more disciplined environment." - James Clear

The Habit Loop

Via 1729. I've had James Clear's book Atomic Habits sitting next to my desk in a pile of books for too long now.
