I'll be the curmudgeon on this one. It is silly to retire a player's number on teams for which he never player. It was stupid when baseball did it in some weird "See, we're not racist" type stunt and it is stupid now. Jackie Robinson retired rather than accept a trade to the Giants and now his number is force retired for a team he hated??? There are many more appropriate ways to recognize or honor retired players.
The best way to honor him is to ensure no one every wears it, so you never spark the conversation ' hey see number xx down there, well there was another before him...' better to just let it rot on a wall rather than live, that makes sense. I can literally, today, name my kid George Washington, but noooo number 42 is sacred.
