Recently read William Kennedy's book
Billy Phelan's Greatest Game at the podcast suggestion of
Rounders co-writer Brian Koppelman. Because of his involvement - I assumed this was a poker-centric book but it was hardly that. Instead it was about Albany, hustlers (whether it be bowling, poker, pool, or life), politics and crime, and being Irish-Catholic in the early 20th century. For a flavor:
Martin's view of his meeting with his father was this: that all sons are Isaac, all fathers are Abraham, and that all sons become Abrahams if they work at it long enough.
I devoured this book and highly recommend it. Already put another of Kennedy's works on my reading list.
