Both are important. Consistency is the foundation, it comes first. Intensity builds upon it.
Training to run a marathon is a good example. Get a plan, then don’t miss a training run for two years.
Wanna be faster? Add weekly intensity… speed work. Solo: repeat quarters or halves. With a group: Indian file workouts. Over two years your marathon time can go from 3hrs 49 mins to 2hrs 59 mins. Ask me how I know.

  2. OK - I'll ask - How?

First let me guess - focus and high intensity work outs. But remember to truly get faster these high intensity sprints need to be done consistently,

    Yes.
    1) Consistency. 50-55 miles a week, every week x three years.
    2) Add intensity during the winter. 1/8 mile indoor track, speed work once a week progressing to twice a week.
    3) Peak for an annual fall marathon.
    Year one: 3hr 49min 1979 Bangor, ME
    Year two: 3hr 20min 1980 Bangor, ME
    Year three: 2hr 59min 1981 Portland ME
Those were the days, yes they were 🎶
