Went to Panera Bread for lunch today, at almost every table the people were on the phone or even laptops, not exchanging a word. Several had earphones on so as not to be receptive to any communication. Meanwhile outside were a couple of fellows playing violins (with an amplifier set up) who had a cardboard sign indicating their need for money. It listed PayPal, Venmo and I think other means of electronic payment. I think we are doomed.
I too like to read but it's not surprising to hear of so many on their phones as it gives them a way of both staying occupied and avoiding any contact with their neighbors.
I try to avoid chains like Panera if possible and to always tip in cash if possible.

It is a matter of perspective. Lunch time is my time and I prefer to eat alone and read.
