Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Shane Parrish and "The Best Summary of Atlas Shrugged." I'm at the point where I just re-read John Gault's speech near the end of the book.

- Don Surber: Lindsey Graham, a profile in courage. A little over the top but Lindsey Graham was a good man.

- How Ukraine built a war fighting state. Did he mean "rationalization" or was that supposed to be "nationalization?" I like "rationalization."

- The Mitch McConnell situation keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Atlas Shrugged

"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities." Ayn Rand

"Of what importance is an individual in the titanic collective achievement of our industrial age?" Ayn Rand

That second quote is taken right from the book and though that mindset quoted helps explain the villains in the book it also explains Rand's  propensity to introduce numerous characters that ultimately have nothing to do with the plot.

The exposition that goes along with each character helps explain Rand's awful reputation as a novelist. I've gotten through about 10% of the book and I can't take anymore.

Yes you wanted each man be be a combination of man of action and philosopher who knows they have free will to act and they decide to act to achieve something. But each industry doesn't need you to create a character to describe such a man. And then create a character for each industry that's a parasite in the same field.

I felt the need to re-read this book because of so many of the characteristics she is known for are coming true daily in the news. I was optimistic that I could gleam some new insight from a re-reading. Instead I'm going on a strike of my own, saying "Who is John Gault?" and putting the book down in favor of another.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Interesting - water found in Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Precursor for life on the largest planet?

- Wasps are getting drunk and terrorizing people in England. Its like one of Orwell's lesser known stories come to life.

- Maggie understood

- What they don't tell you was the article was sponsored by the Big Cucumber lobby

- Wow - it's scary how much personal data Google is accumulating. I guess "Don't be evil" is right out the window.

- Can't see how Kavanaugh doesn't get on the Supreme Court

- Elizabeth Warren's plan to nationalize corporations. Scary! I USED to think some aspects of Atlas Shrugged were far-fetched.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Seattle City Council's tax on successful companies like Amazon to fight homelessness seems like it should be the plot-line to an Atlas Shrugged sequel... Heh Heh - NBA jokes they're FANTASTIC!... Social Darwinism? Is that like Social Drinking? I only believe in evolution when with friends and only in moderation? And never when alone... Elon Musk vs Warren Buffett when it comes to "moats" and corporate strategy.. Planned Parenthood promoting Mothers Day is like the Venezuelan government sponsoring a gourmet cooking show for the common man. Not sure if it was bad optics by Planned Parenthood or they feel so untouchable politically that they were purposely poking a finger into the eyes of their critics... This is why I love history... Heh Heh...
