I was taught the song in 3rd grade - in public school. I doubt very much that the song is being taught today. And we are a poorer nation for that change.
We learned it as well, and when the line "With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:" came up all the prepubescent boys like me could hardly control our mirth. Bosom! Only to be glared at by the teacher. Yes we are poorer for not having things like real history taught anymore.
Office mate worked through college driving a tour bus. One route went by Munson Hill, Arlington, VA, site of Howe's visit. He'd tell the story on east bound Route 50 and timed it so they'd top a rise and the DC skyline came into view. He'd then start a cassette of Battle Hymn of the Republic. Never failed to bring tears to the tourist's eyes.
