As an official for intramural volleyball, and softball; youth and high school baseball; and recently retired master track and field official, I can tell you this has been a discussion held many times among our groups. Seems they wanted to hand out the participation awards in the parking lot with nobody getting out of the car. No game to be held as it might smite the sensibilities of someone to not be declared "a winner."
And the kids know those trophies are meaningless. Show me a kid who puts a participation trophy in a place of honor and I'll show you a kid who either has a wicked ironic sense or humor or who will be a future drag on society.
