After 56 years I have learned different. Expect anything and be disappointed. Expect nothing and you could be surprised every decade or so... Men understand they can reply on themselves and themselves alone.
I think its saying basically the same thing - the expectation of yourself is to give the best effort you can. The results don't matter at that point as long as you tried your best. Anything good that comes from it is a bonus.
