Player Comparison

Here's a mind blowing player comparison:

Player A .331 BA/ .556 SLG/ .967 OPS/ 103 R/ 25 HR/ 105 RBI
Player B .347 BA/ .603 SLG/ 1.012 OPS/ 84 R/ 19 HR/ 57 RBI

Player A is Freddy Lynn from 1975 - the year he won both the AL ROY and MVP awards. Player B is Mike Trout from this season. With two months left in the season - Trout is on track to blow away Lynn's numbers (in everything but RBI). What's really mind blowing is that Trout is three years younger than what Lynn was in 1975.

Incredible.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I wonder if all the votes for AL Rookie of the Year are already in? If not Rick Porcello has the ultimate stage to impress voters when he starts for the Tigers in the one-game playoff on Tuesday. Not sure who wins this game but my gut says it will be a relatively high scoring affair.... Joe Flacco was OK for the Ravens yesterday but don't forget the name Dominic Randolph. He's the starting QB for Holy Cross and he's a better player than either Flacco or Ryan Fitzpatrick were in college... The one game playoff reminds me of one of my favorite stats. Jim Rice started for Boston back in 1978 when the Red Sox faced the Yankees in a one-game playoff (f*cking Bucky Dent). That meant that Rice played in all 163 games that season. Only Brandon Inge is close to that mark having played in 160 games so far this season... The New Orleans Saints defense has been as impressive as the offense. Adding Gregg Williams as Defensive Coordinator and Darren Sharper to a one-year deal have really made a difference... I think one of the main lessons so far in this NFL season is don't fire your Offensive Coordinator during the pre-season games. The Bills and the Buccaneers have been awful so far.... Happy 60th birthday to baseball genius Bill James...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Joe Montana couldn't have handled this any better... Albert Pujols is on pace for a MLB leading 373 total bases - makes you appreciate the amazing 406 total bases Jim Rice had in 1978... Selection of strange signs and bizarre translations from around the world... Besides Angels fans and fantasy baseball geeks - who knew? Kendry Morales of the Angels has a better OPS than Yankees Mark Teixeira (.931 to .927) and despite Teixeira having more HR Morales is out-slugging him by 33 points (.581 to .548)... Right now I would have to give the AL ROY to Toronto's Ricky Romero (10-4 and 3.53 ERA). Weiters and Price? Not so much... Cool technology - How to Transcribe a Whiteboard with Your Cameraphone... How close is the AL East race? The RedSox and Yankees have played almost the same number of games and have almost identical records home (both 35-17) and road (Y 28-25 and RS 27-25) and vs lefty (both 22-13) and righties (Y 41-29 and RS 40-29)... I think if you had to give out the NL ROY right now - then it would have to go to JA Happ (7-2 / 2.93 ERA) of the Phillies although an excellent case could be made for the Cubs Randy Wells... Top 5 - 2007 AL ROY

Here's how I see the 2007 AL Rookie of the Year:

1. Dustin Pedroia Red Sox
2. Reggie Willits Angels
3. Daisuke Matsuzaka Red Sox
4. Brian Bannister Royals
5. (tie) Jeremy Guthrie Orioles (tie) Hideki Okajima Red Sox

Here is my thinking on how I ranked the players:

Just like how position players normally get many more votes in MVP voting - there is also a weighted bias toward position players in the ROY voting as well. Pedroia gets the top nod because he's played since Opening Day and he has an 86 point advantage in OPS over Willits among other reasons. Pedroia may be hurt by the fact that he has two teammates in the running for the award as well as the fact that there are 4 legitimate East Coast candidates whereas Willits just has Bannister of the Royals west of the Mississippi.

I have Dice-K ranked above Bannister and Guthrie because he is far ahead in starts, IP and K's. Those 5 extra starts Dice-K has over Bannister and Guthrie have lots of value to me. Ask yourself if Bannister and Guthrie had those 5 extra starts - what are the odds that they would have been bombed in one of those starts and raised their ERA's above 4.00? I tend to value IP as one of best indicators of a pitcher's value to a team.
