Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Drew Bledsoe's middle name is McQueen. How did I not know that? I hope it is because his parents were big Steve McQueen fans and not because of a family name thing... Jeff Passan points out that Josh Hamilton is ranked 121st out of 151 players who qualify with his anemic .686 OPS and he still has 4-years and almost $100 million left on his contract. I wonder if Nick Cafardo still thinks the Red Sox should have signed Hamilton... I went to a gang rumble and a Chuckie Cheese birthday party broke out... I was only kidding a while back when I said A-Rod is acting this way because he's building the groundwork for an insanity defense but now I'm not so sure it's a joke... Very cool - guy bikes to all 30 MLB parks for charity... Do gangs even have rumbles anymore? Is that like a 1950's thing and it is all drive-by's now?... I'm not offended by the Washington Redskins name but I hope the people who are also demand that the NAACP change the name of their organization... Interesting update on what Daniel Radcliffe has been up to...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The Yankees have to give CC Sabathia an extension or redo his 7-year $152 million contract. There are no aces available in the 2012 free agent class and CC would make a fortune. I am amused by the situation because it seems like the perfect storm of controversy and unmet expectations is brewing for New York this season... Am I a heretic for wanting to own this painting? I also have to note that a Christian can look at that an laugh while if it was Mohammed and not Christ - a fatwah would be issued for the artist's death... The things you learn on the Internet (via Mental Floss): "Replacement players used during the 1987 NFL strike included current Saints coach Sean Payton, UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, and Suge Knight"... I am trying to think of a more despicable athlete from my lifetime than Art Schlichter and I can only think of Rae Carruth and OJ. Schlichter was just charged with felony for allegedly ripping off Columbus widow for more than $1 million... The Patriots will be retiring Drew Bledsoe's #11 in 2011 - kind of symmetrical if you think about it. Bledsoe is also eligible for the Football Hall of Fame starting this year. I think he deserves to be voted in... As a pretty much hard and fast rule - real men should wear neither Capri pants nor yoga pants. So let it be written, so let it be done... Congratulations to Bill Russell who is getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom today. It still bugs me that there is no statue to Russell in Boston...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It is interesting to note that Brett Favre is almost 3-years older than Drew Bledsoe and now he has almost exactly double the number of TD's (501 to 251) and Bledsoe was one of the most prolific passers in history... Very interesting read - the story behind the DirecTV Russian oligarch commercial. My favorite tidbit is the fact that the Russian guy is actually played by an Irish actor... Nice observation by Jason Whitlock who noticed that Mike Tirico was unusually silent last night whenever Favre's dong pictures were being discussed. Tirico had some of those problems himself... Public Service Announcement: Experts say putting ice cubes up the rectums of unconscious people has no physiological benefit and can even lead to seizures and stroke. The more you know... Wow - the true size of Africa... I still say "the Junk Mailer" is the best Brett Favre nickname... Charlie Casserly is reporting that Chumbawumba has been named to replace the Black Eyed Peas at this year's Super Bowl half-time... Michelangelo painting worth $300M found in Buffalo of all places... Opulence - they guy in the Charles Schwab commercial who doesn't like vineyards - he doesn't have it... If the Playboy Channel had topless tennis I think the ratings would be higher than the NHL on Versus... I'm convinced that the Chrysler "race you home" commercial is dubbed in English and that the kid is actually running away from bullies who want to beat him up. The mini-van saves him. Commercial makes much more sense if you look at it that way... Best Typo of the Year. Read the correction at top...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I love these "Hitler in the bunker" spoofs. My favorite was the Terrell Owens one. In the newest one Hitler learns of Michael Jackson's death. Hitler loved Michale Jackson as much as the next Nazi... Pitcher Dan Haren has the 4th best batting average on the Diamondbacks (3rd best if you kick out Alex Romero who has only played 6 games). It should come as no surprise then that the the Diamondbacks have the 2nd worst team batting average in the NL... Drew Bledsoe is opening his own winery. I am so jealous. I would love to own my own vineyard and winery. I'll be buying a couple of bottles of Doubleback when they become available... Do the Nationals have the Braves number? Last season the Nationals were 12-6 against the Braves including a 7-2 mark at Nationals Park. This season the Braves are 5-3 against Washington but all 3 of the Nationals wins have come at Nationals Park. Even if I knew those numbers before now - I still would have picked Tommy Hanson and the Braves yesterday as my POTD (of course if I knew the final score I would have gone the other way)...

McNabb = Drew Bledsoe?

Donovan McNabb was sacked 12 times last night. Twelve times! Meanwhile Jeff Garcia was not sacked a single time for Tampa Bay yesterday.

A few years ago Bill Belichick faced Drew Bledsoe when Bledsoe was no longer playing for the Patriots and instead was the QB for the Bills. Belichick blitzed the hell out of Bledsoe and made him take lots of sacks and make lots of mistakes. It became a blueprint defense for the rest of the league against Bledsoe who went from being a marquee name in the game to being retired in short duration.

Last night the Giants gave the rest of the league the blueprint for beating the Eagles when they lineup Donovan McNabb behind center. If opposing teams can get just half of the sacks that the Giants got last night - then the Donovan McNabb era in Philadelphia will soon be at an end. The Eagles next three opponents - the Jets, Bears and Vikings all have very good front sevens and it looks like there is a recipe for disaster brewing in Philadelphia. The Eagles don't have very good receivers, McNabb isn't as mobile as he used to be and last night the Eagles offensive line was completely exposed.

Fans will be shouting for AJ Feeley or rookie Kevin Kolb maybe by halftime of the next home game against the Bears.
