Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
Rest in peace Hank Aaron.If you have a few moments today spend some time looking at his career stats. Incredible! Still the all-time leader in RBI and total bases (and in my mind he's still the HR king)... So did half of the country wake up Thursday morning and wonder, "Wait am I a dog-faced pony soldier?"... Lady Gaga is among the 46 people President Biden is following on Twitter. But not Taylor Swift or Beyonce - are their rabid fans aware of this giant slight?... "Page 3 of 2" would be a great name for a blog... My greatest hope... "Are you now or have you ever been a dog-faced pony soldier?"... A Christopher Hitchens quote that is very relevant to the latest Impeachment, "That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence"... Sportswriters please take note - due to Covid-19 concerns I will NOT be participating in this year's NBA Dunk Contest. I repeat - I will NOT be participating. Thank you for your understanding...

Baseball Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous baseball thoughts and observations.
Opening Day at Fenway today and the boys will get their rings and the banner will be raised. Praise them with great praise. Yankees suck... Torii Hunter looks like a good investment for the Angels. Last night he hit 2 HR with the second being a game winning grand slam... Speaking of last night's Angels game - between closer Joe Borowski of the Indians and Frankie Rodriguez of the Angels 7 runs were given up in less than one combined inning (both closers only managed one out). That's some end of game gasoline... The Boston Symphony Orchestra will be doing the National Anthem and providing general class atmosphere. I hope to God that the Cowsills are not part of Opening Day at Fenway. Or any future games at Fenway for that matter... Mark Reynolds of the Diamondbacks is my darkhorse candidate for NL MVP. I've said it before but if he hits 30 HR and drives in 100 then the Diamondbacks will be representing the NL in the World Series... As great as Tom Seaver was - Tom Glavine has a chance to pass him in wins this season (Seaver has 311 wins to Glavine's 303). What's impressive is the fact that Glavine has accumulated those 303 wins in much fewer innings (Seaver ended up pitching 4782 innings to Glavine's 4361 and counting). I guess that's really a result of pitching in two different eras. Seaver had 231 career complete games compared to 56 for Glavine (and Glavine was top 10 in complete games 8 times in his career). Pitchers just don't finish games like they used to. And no - I'm not implying in any way that Glavine was as good as Seaver. I do think that Glavine gets short shrift in terms of recognition though... On this day in 1974 - Hank Aaron hit HR # 715 to break Babe Ruth's record...

Top 5 - Baseball Players from Alabama
Here are who I consider the top 5 baseball players born in Alabama.
1. Hank Aaron - the undisputed RBI king and in my mind still the true Home Run King
2. Willie Mays - in almost any other state - Willie Mays would be #1
3. Satchel Paige - one of the greatest pitchers of all-time
4. Willie McCovey - Hall of Fame 1st baseman
5. Ozzie Smith - Hall of Fame shortstop - one of the greatest defensive players in history - 13 consecutive Gold Gloves
I wasn't prepared for the number of great players from the State of Alabama. The above top 5 players would give any state a run for its money and consider that the following Hall of Famers did not even make the list.
Heinie Manush - Hall of Fame outfielder and one of the all-time great names in sports
Joe Sewell - Hall of Fame infielder
Billy Williams - Hall of Fame outfielder for the Cubbies
Don Sutton - Hall of Fame Pitcher - 324 career victories
Early Winn - Hall of Fame pitcher - exactly 300 career wins
I couldn't help but think that you could put together a great all-time team from Alabama. The two weak positions would be at catcher and closer but you could have Bo Jackson coming off the bench and George Foster at DH.

The Home Run Record
Everyone who follows baseball knows that Barry Bonds is on the cusp of passing Hank Aaron as the all-time home run king. Likewise everyone knows that Hank Aaron surpassed Babe Ruth's then record 714 home runs to grab the crown. However - you would have to be a real baseball geek to know who Babe Ruth passed to become the home run king in his own right.
The answer to that is Roger Connor who held the home run record before Babe Ruth came along. And how many home runs did Connor have? Just 136. That should give you a good idea of how much Babe Ruth changed the game of baseball.

Miscellaneous baseball thoughts and observations.
Much is being made of A-Rod's walk off grand slam against the Orioles yesterday. Let me say that Alex Rodriguez is indeed a great player and much of the criticism of him is petty and usually based upon either envy of his huge contract, disgust at his hyper-pc always trying to say scripted type things or because some people are big Derek Jeter fans and they think they need to cut A-Rod down in order to keep Jeter on a pedestal. I just wanted to note two things. First A-Rod's two home runs yesterday moved him out of his tie for 28th place on the all-time HR list with Dave Winfield who was derisively known in some quarters as Mr. May (a name some say fits A-Rod better). Second - I still say that the Rangers would have been better off if they just kept A-Rod. They're paying half his salary anyway. If A-Rod had stayed in Texas - he probably would have even better numbers by now and this season he'd probably opt out of his contract with the Yankees begging to sign him... It took only five games but already there are no undefeated teams and no teams who have not won at least one game... The feared Boston offense is dead last in the AL in runs per game with an anaemic 3.20 runs per game. The Indians, Yankees and Blue jays are all averaging at least double that number of runs. Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are a combined 8-38 (.211) with just one extra base hit between them... Travis Buck had a great spring training for the A's - leading them in pre-season hits with 21. Buck's great spring coupled with injuries in the A's outfield opened a roster spot for the 23-year old. But since the real games have begun Buck has struck out in 8 of his 13 at bats and may be playing himself out of that roster spot... Pitching was supposed to be a trouble spot for the Mets but so far the pitching staff is sporting a very impressive 1.02 ERA. Of course this could also be the result of playing their openings series against the Cardinals who are averaging a worse than AAA 1.40 runs per game. Seriously - you could bring up a AAA team and I bet they average better than 1.40 runs per game... On this date in 1974 - Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run breaking Babe Ruth's career record for homers. To me and to many others - Aaron remains the true home run king - no matter what Barry Bonds does...
