Red Sox Notes
Curt Schilling goes into tomorrow's Opening Day start with 207 career wins. That puts him tied for 94th on the all-time list with Hall of Famers Bob Lemon and Hal Newhouser plus Carl Mays and Kenny Rogers. Schilling's next win (hopefully tomorrow) ties him for 93rd place with Eddie Cicotte who is best known for being part of the 1919 Black Sox.
Just by starting the game - Schilling moves into a tie for 98th place on the list for most games started. Schilling will be tied with Bob Knepper at least until Scilling's next start.
Schilling is not the only Red Sox player who can move up on some of the all-time lists on Opening Day. Manny Ramirez needs two more bases to tie the great Joe DiMaggio's 3,948 total bases which is 76th best on the all-time list. Also - if the Royals intentionally walk Manny to get to JD Drew - then that will be the 155th career intentional walk for Manny which will tie him for 55th place all-time with Jeff Bagwell and Will Clark. On the flip-side - if the Royals pitch to Manny and he hits into a double play - then that will tie Manny on the all-time grounded into double play list with Albert Belle and Ruben Sierra at 86th place on the all-time list.
Right now Schilling and the Red Sox are big favorites to win against Kansas City tomorrow. Currently you'd have to bet $195 on the Red Sox to win $100 with the over/under for runs being set at 9.5. I'm a huge Red Sox fan and Schilling has been money in Opening Day starts (going 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA in past Opening Day starts) but the money you'd have to risk just isn't worth the reward. If anything my inclination would be to bet the under (unless the wind is blowing out - and it is supposed to be windy tomorrow in KC).
