Some College Football Thoughts

Yesterday was a big day of upsets in college football starting with Vanderbilt defeating number 1 Alabama in Nashville and including number 4 Tennessee falling to the Razorbacks in Arkansas. The day also included number 9 Missouri getting easily handled by Texas A&M, number 10 Michigan losing to Washington, number 11 USC losing to Minnesota, and number 22 Louisville losing to ACC newbie SMU. Some more observations include:

- Not saying - just saying

- College football stat of the day

- If you were wondering what happened to Vanderbilt's goalpost after the 3-mile treck through Nashville to the river.

- We also have to include this crazy last play of the UConn-Temple game.

- Nick Saban with some good life advice that just apply to coaching

- Strange day for Notre Dame fans. They easily beat Texas A&M in their season opener and the Aggies handled Missouri but they beat Louisville last week and the Cardinals lost to SMU. Meanwhile the team to beat them - NIU was losing to UMass 13-7 at halftime. Imagine if that held up? What a day of rollercoaster finals.

- As good as the football was those suffering from Hurricane Helene were never far from people's minds.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- In wake of Impeachment, Biden White House sends memos to corporate media to go after Republicans. All it takes is for Biden to address the press live but I think that'll never happen.

Interesting look a Alabama visiting non-Power 5 USF on Saturday. Always found it amusing that the University of Southern Florida is in Tampa. If you know your geography - this is amusing.

- Iconic Seattle fish market to close after 77-years amid rising crime and homelessness. Hard not to laugh at the self-inflicted wounds of Seattle and Portland.

- Profile pf Alex Rodriguez on ESPN that paints him as a steroids using, rat informant. One can't help but wonder if ESPN is trying to get A-Rod out of the broadcast booth.

- Interesting look at the standoff between Disney and Spectrum.  Think Disney has badly overpaid their hand.

- Tyler Cowen on if Bach is the greatest achiever in history.

- Interesting profile of Steve Sarkisian in the eve of the Alabama v Texas showdown

- The Free Press: Are NFL running backs the new face of the American labor movement? Not sure the threat of a strike by NFL RB's really scares anyone. There are plenty more who would love the chance of a $1.8 average salary.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Actually think Bill Belichick did Cam Newton a favor by releasing him and would not be surprised if that request actually came from Cam Newton who has made as much money as he's going to make in New England. Cam has his signing bonus and his guaranteed base salary but there was no way he was going to make his incentives as a back up. Now he is free to sign with another team where he has a chance to be the starting QB... Potatoes were forbidden in England until the early 18th century for the simple reason that potatoes aren't mentioned in the Bible. You know what else isn't mentioned in the Bible? England!... If there was a Church of Bacon - I'd be a parishioner. Maybe even a priest... Beach and Pina Colada season is officially over. It is now beer and football season... Interesting nugget from ESPN, "In the last 39 seasons, no quarterback drafted out of Alabama has won more than seven starts in a single year." Wish I could bet that Mac Jones would break that trend - oh wait - I already did...

- Chinese Media Fabricated "Swiss Biologist" Who Claimed US had Pressured WHO Into Investigating Wuhan Lab Leak Theory. Don't trust China. China is asshole!

- 1 in 5 kids will be homeschooled this fall. That's a seismic change in education (and teacher's unions have nobody to blame but themselves).

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The question I'm curious about but nobody seems to bothered to ask is "Has Elijah Cummings' house been broken into before?" And if so - how many times before? The Congressman certainly acted like someone who was prepared by prior experience... I'm an awful person for laughing at this... "Flying by the seat of your pants precedes crashing by the seat of your pants." - Bill Walsh... Clemson may have the top ranked team in college football but according to Phil Steele the Tigers don't have a special teams unit ranked in the top 50. Wonder if that could come back and bite them in a close game (like say against Alabama)... Four Dimensional Symmetry would be a great name for a blog... I think Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me would be a good candidate for a cover re-make BY A MAN. Would put a twist on the classic song...

Roll Tide

- I believe in the soul, the Roll Tide, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the strong side sweep, high fiber, good scotch, and that the teams of Auburn are self-indulgent, overrated crap. Roll Tide
- In Soviet Russia - Tide Rolls you
- Oh Mandy, you came and you gave without taking - and then I gave you Roll Tide - Oh Mandy
- I see Roll Tide people. Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're Roll Tide.
- E = Roll Tide Squared
- Confucius say Roll Tide is Erik Estrada - all else is Larry Wilcox. Roll Tide
- Me Roll Tide - you Jane
- Of all the words of tongue and pen - the awesomest are Roll Tide!
- Latin: "Audio, video, disco, Rolltideo" English: "I hear, I see, I learn, I Roll Tide"

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Paul Pabst from the Dan Patrick show and others have made this point but in other years the NCAAF Championship game would most likely have been Florida State vs Alabama. Both of the losing teams in this years playoff format... Sony most likely an inside job... I've said this before but if Peyton Manning changed his audible from "Omaha! Omaha!" to "Obama! Obama!" - would he lose half his endorsements?... Was the Shire from Lord of the Rings based on Kentucky?... Meat Slurry would be a good name for a band. Or for an entree companion to Golden Corral's Chocolate Waterfall... Who knew? After the attack on Pearl Harbor - Canada declared war on Japan before the US did... Coffee naps! I'm so in!...

NCAA Picks of the Day

Here's who I like in today's NCAA football action:

- Alabama -9 over Texas A&M. This could be a close game but if given the chance Nick Saban will put down the hammer on A&M. I think the Tide wins by 2 TD's.

-  South Carolina -13.5 over Vandy. As long as this stays at less than 14 points I like this game. Spurrier seems good at running up the score after losses.

I also like BC getting +15 against USC. This may because I'm a BC fan but you may want to look at BC as a team to tease or bet outright.

EDIT: MY PICKS SUCK!
