Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
I think the NFL should go ahead and publish next season's schedule. Any team that cannot host a game because its State or City is still under lockdown would simply forfeit that game... I haven't watched Tiger King (and have no plans to) but my mind made a connection of that show to the awful 1982 movie Cat People. So now every time I read something or hear someone talking about Tiger King the David Bowie song Cat People (Putting Out the Fire) starts playing in my head (not a bad song)... "Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you sit down quietly, may alight upon you." - Nathaniel Hawthorne... Thursday April 16th is National High Five Day in the US. Pretty sure that this won't be celebrated too much this year... Never really been a wine drinker but I think I might start some in-house wine testing starting next week... Joe Biden's campaign slogan should be, "Joe Biden: Don't Worry He's Only a Little Bit Off"...

Bowie and Bing
As big as David Bowie was - back in the day Bing Crosby was bigger. Much bigger.
Now Bing is mostly forgotten. As will be David Bowie in a few years. It's the way of the world.
Both Bowie and Bing would trade all of their fortune and fame to trade places with you today. No matter what your circumstances these past giants would love to breathe the air once again. And if given that choice do you think they would sweat the small stuff?
Think about that.

New English National Anthem
England is thinking about adopting a new national anthem to replace God Save the Queen to be played before sporting events and also I would assume during medal presentations. I really like the idea of England adopting David Bowie's Heroes as their new anthem. The lyrics actually work pretty well for sporting events.
Let me also repeat my belief that American should adopt Free Bird as our new national anthem.

David Bowie
I liked David Bowie's music but didn't LOVE his music. I mourn more the loss of a public figure who was so obviously intelligent and in possession of such a top shelf sense of humor (those types of people seem to very rare theses days). This article seems to reflect my feelings on the passing of Bowie (except I wasn't a bully and the person who made me re-think Bowie was my daughter and not a co-worker).
Stories like how Bowie took up boxing help to show both how multi-layered the man was but also how generous he was with his time and curiosity.
It also had to be said that Bowie's death seems to hit so many so hard because it came out of the blue. Despite the fact that he was diagnosed with cancer more than 18-months ago - very few were aware of it. His health, privacy and circumstance were truly his own. He died with undenied class and style. The same way he lived his life.
EDIT: This video helps illustrate just how smart and funny a man David Bowie was.

Best Albums of the 70's?
I have a question mark in the title because I really don't agree with this list of the best albums of the 1970's. And I know the list is 9-years old but it is new to me.
During the 70's I was a kid. But aren't kids the most impressionable? I have to admit that I don't recognize half of the albums on the list. Maybe that's my ignorance but to have a list like this and not have something from Bruce Springsteen when he was at his peak tells me that maybe I'm not the ignorant one. No Bon Scott AC/DC? Highway to Hell is better than 90 percent of the albums on the list.
At number 1 on the list is Low from David Bowie. As I mentioned - I was an impressionable kid in the 70's but this album didn't make an impression on me. The only song I recognize is Sound and Vision - which is an OK song but it is no London Calling.

Suffragette City
I was listening to the radio when David Bowie's Suffragette City came on. After hearing the song for most of my life - it suddenly struck me what a silly name for a song Suffragette City really is. Metropolis of women who vote isn't as catchy but if you think about it that's what suffragette city means. It's like a MadLib where a thing and a place are mashed together to make up the lyrical basis of a song.
I got to thinking that if I had a band - I'd do a remake of Suffragette City but I'd rename if Jury Pool Kingdom (just swap out the words). And that part of the song that has "Wham, bam, thank you mam" - I'd replace that with "Grudge, grudge, thank you Judge."
If only I had a band.
