A Sad Story

A movie's cinematographer has died after being shot by a prop gun on a movie set. The gun was fired by Alec Baldwin but until proven otherwise I'd hold him completely innocent. In fact - I'd say he's also one of the victims. Can't imagine how awful he must feel.

On the other hand - Hollywood has had so many cop show plot twists where someone switches blank prop gun bullets with real ones that I'll be following this story to see what the investigation finds. If only Columbo or Castle were on the case.

EDIT: Seems like it was a real gun loaded with one real live round - not a "prop gun." Still giving Baldwin the benefit of the doubt - for now.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Suddenly NFL people are wondering if Nick Mullens is going to do to Jimmy G what Tom Brady did to Drew Bledsoe... Any time I see Newt Gingrich - I picture him as Santa's gay half-brother to see if it makes him more likable... 10 Commandments of Irish Pub Etiquette... Quote of the Day: "I am an old man and have known many troubles, but most of them never happened." - Mark Twain... Heh Heh... Rental Soap would be a good name for a band (or a really bad business start-up idea)... When a bad guy with a gun meets a good guy in a cowboy hat...

Trump and Fake News Part II

Earlier I speculated that the golden shower jokes would not stop - so far that's true. I also speculated that Trump might retaliate by kicking the White House Press Corps out of the White House and reopen the White House Pool. Looks like the former might happen still waiting on news about the pool.

So how did we get to this point? In my youth the two most well-known (non-sports) reporters may have been Sam Donaldson (who got famous for literally yelling questions at the President so much that he got parodied on SNL) and Geraldo Rivera whose main motivation in journalism seemed to be a narcissistic need to be famous (when you start with a fake name can fake news be far behind?). You had Dan Rather (CBS) and Brian Williams (NBC) making shit up and Wolf Blitzer (CNN) exposing himself as a moron on Jeopardy! And these are the people the public is supposed to trust for "real news"?

Let's not forget that CNN (whose tagline at the time was "the most trusted name in news") made a deal with Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf War about what they could and could not report in exchange for "access".

Now President Trump can just shout "Fake News!" any time he doesn't like the line of questioning and who can blame him? If the media complains the public impression would be the media is whining because the President doesn't like to answer "gotcha" questions from people who don't know anyone who owns a pickup truck.

The media made this bed. Years of "Your child's life is in danger - we'll tell you why after these words from our sponsor" and click-bait journalism have withered away whatever trust the public had. Now most of the public just trusts the media that agrees with their own point of view. So what's the point of a President answering any questions from outlets that may disagree with him or who may be blatantly acting for the opposition party?

It used to be the public turned to the media to find out the who, what, where and sometimes why of a story. Now it's a perverted version of Cui Buono - how does this journalist or media outlet stand to benefit from this story?

The media has a long way to go to regain the public trust. I'm afraid they're not up to the job.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Michael Douglas says he got throat cancer from cunnilingus - what does science say about that claim?... "Stinktum" should be a word. It sound much better than either "anus" or "sphincter"... Burning Esophagus would be a good name for a band...  Awesome photo... Some people are suggesting Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) as the next Doctor Who but I think the identical twins who played Fred and George would be a better choice. That way you could have the Dr. crossing his own time-line as often as you like without expensive special effects... Interesting look at how the Red Sox got David Ortiz 10-years ago and how he asked to be let go when he wasn't fitting in at first. Getting rid of Shea Hillenbrand and keeping Ortiz will always be one of the most under-rated moves in team history... The World Pastrami Eating Contest was Sunday - here's the trophy. For my money ($5) the best pastrami sandwich in Worcester is at Breen's Cafe... There should have been an episode of Magnum PI where Magnum saw Higgins kill his ex-wife and a waiter but kept silent about it for years... Separated at birth - Alec Baldwin and Millard Fillmore... The word "posh" came from Thomas Cook booking British upper class on cruises with "Port Out - Starboard Home" cabins...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I am so happy that Opening Day is finally here. Wicked excited... Coolest pool table ever!...  I have not seen the video of Kevin Ware's injury and God willing - I hope I never will... Yesterday I re-ordered HBO because I didn't want to miss the new season of Game of Thrones. I cancelled HBO when last season of GoT ended and will do so once again this year... Please don't get an erection! Please don't get an erection!... Jackie Bradley Jr. will be the youngest starting left fielder for the Red Sox since Yaz started in left back in 1961... Are the people in Atlanta really calling the Braves outfield, "Up, Up and a Hey"? That's pretty clever... Love language stuff like this - British words and phrases that don't translate for Americans and vice versa... Alec Baldwin has basically morphed into Leslie Neilsen at this point - hasn't he?... Metal Debris would be a good name for a band... A good reminder for a Monday morning, "If you don't know what your top three priorities are, you don't have priorities" - Donald Rumsfeld... I know one of my priorities for today is to watch the Red Sox / Yankees game...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share.

Comedians in Cars getting Coffee - Jerry Seinfeld and Alec Baldwin. I could listen to Alec Baldwin do characters speaking in a Burt Lancaster voice for hours.

If you are a Breaking Bad fan then this interview with Betsy Brandt (Marie) is a must read.

Trent Dilfer - Matt Hasselbeck saved my life.

Hubble's top 100 photos - the word awesome is seldom used correctly in the literal sense but these photos are awesome!

Interesting - Dr. Jane Goodall believes in Bigfoot.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Nice analysis of some of Red Sox potential trade chips. Really surprised that Lars Anderson wasn't mentioned. He's completely blocked by Adrian Gonzalez... If I was in the US Senate I would attach approval for the Keystone oil pipeline to every since piece of legislation daring President Obama to veto everything. The country would win either way... Lindsey Vonn takes 1st place at the Alpine World Cup, then Tebows on medal stand... USA Networks has announced a new TV show. In the pilot an aging TV star is kicked off a flight in Miami and has to do good deeds to get his reputation back. Burn Notice II with Alec Baldwin... The Soviet Union Was Dissolved 20 Years Ago Today. Some very interesting facts in the link. The one that stood out for me was male life expectancy in 1980 USSR was 62 but today male life expectancy in Russian Federation is just 59. What's up with that?... Very sad day here in Worcester as another Worcester Fireman has given the last full measure of devotion a little over 12 years since the City lost 6 heroes.
