Top 5 - Famous People who Started as Accountants

In honor of Bob Newhart turning 93 on Monday - here is my Top 5 list of famous people who started off as accountants.

1. Bob Newhart - started out in accounting. This isn't really surprising. Bob is a favorite of mine.

2. Peter Falk - before he was an actor he was a CPA - who knew?

3. John Grisham - I think most people knew that the famous novelist was a lawyer but did you know he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Mississippi State University?

4. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell - he graduated from Cal Poly University-San Luis Opispo with a degree in business and accounting. It would be kinda cool to bring a UFC champ to an IRS audit.

5. (Tie) Kevin Kennedy - the former MLB Manager was a CPA. Supposedly in the minor leagues he did his players’ tax returns to make extra money. He's the only guy on the list who was probably better as an accountant than in the profession he's best known for. (Tie) Gibby Haynes - lead singer of The Butthole Surfers. He went to Trinity University and earned his degree in accounting. After graduating he worked for over a year at an accounting firm before starting the band. Pepper is one of my favorite songs.

One of the more surprising facts about Peter Falk that I learned upon his passing was the fact that before Falk became an actor - he was an accountant. He was an actual CPA. That got me wondering what other famous people were closet accountants? Here is my Top 5 list.

Red Sox Magic Number - 50

The Red Sox magic number is now down to 50.

The number 50 also happens to be the number lefty Jamie Moyer wore for the Red Sox in 1996. Of course Moyer did not last long in Boston because then manager Kevin Kennedy liked fireballer pitchers and Moyer pitched with his head and not his balls. So the Red Sox traded Moyer for Darren Bragg - a player who didn't have much talent but sure got dirty playing. Kevin Kennedy's type of player.

Since leaving the Red Sox - Jamie Moyer has won 166 games.

These days the Red Sox embrace crafty lefty pitchers like Kason Gabbard and Jon Lester. And Kevin Kennedy hasn't been able to get a big league managing job since being fired by the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have 58 games left. If they just went .500 for the rest of the season - then the Yankees would have to go 38-20 just to tie. That's a .655 winning percentage. I think Yankee fans should just accept the fact that they are not catching the Red Sox.

Dirtbag Red Sox

Chad Finn has put together his all-time Red Sox dirtbag roster. I should note that it really isn't "all-time" since Finn only considers players since 1978 when he really started following the team.

I agree with most of the choices with a couple of exceptions.

I would argue Kevin Kennedy over Joe Kerrigan as manager. Kennedy ran gentleman Jamie Moyer out of town because Moyer wasn't the type of head-hunting flame-throwing pitcher Kennedy preferred. Kennedy also let clowns like Jose Canseco run the clubhouse. There's a reason Kennedy hasn't gotten another managing job since he was let go following the 1996 season.

There is no way that Tony Clark should be on anyone's "dirtbag" list. Finn is way off base on that choice. Kevin Millar would be a good fill-in at first in my opinion. He was barely replacement level (pun intended) and this dirtbag would carp about playing time? I enjoy reminding my firend Tim who is heavily into Union activity of the fact that Millar was a scab.

I would second the opinion that Jose Canseco should be added as the team's strength and conditioning coach if Steve "Psycho" Lyons could be added as team psychologist..
