Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Bob Newhart's IMDB page makes for pretty interesting reading. Even if he never even had successful TV series - he was still quote an accomplished actor.

- VDH on letting the voters decide the President - for once!

- UCLA wants to build a rooftop garden for taking psychedelics. As an aside - SFGate has a cannabis editor.

- Morgan Housel: Makes You Think

Bob Newhart RIP

We all knew this day was coming but it still hurts. Comedy legend Bob Newhart has passed away aged 94. He famously was best friends with Don Rickles and in my eyes - the most famous Chicago Cubs fan of them all.

He could take any famous historical character and a simple telephone as a prop and make instant art.

He had one of the most famous openings to any hit show ever. And he had one of the best final acts of any hit TV show ever. That ending BTW was thought up by his wife of 50-years Ginny.

There will never be another like the button-down mind of Bob Newhart.

Bob Newhart Turns 94

The world's greatest living comedian, think even Dave Chapelle would agree on that, turns 94 today. Bob Newhart is also the most famous person to ever start off as an accountant

Top 5 - Famous People who Started as Accountants

In honor of Bob Newhart turning 93 on Monday - here is my Top 5 list of famous people who started off as accountants.

1. Bob Newhart - started out in accounting. This isn't really surprising. Bob is a favorite of mine.

2. Peter Falk - before he was an actor he was a CPA - who knew?

3. John Grisham - I think most people knew that the famous novelist was a lawyer but did you know he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Mississippi State University?

4. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell - he graduated from Cal Poly University-San Luis Opispo with a degree in business and accounting. It would be kinda cool to bring a UFC champ to an IRS audit.

5. (Tie) Kevin Kennedy - the former MLB Manager was a CPA. Supposedly in the minor leagues he did his players’ tax returns to make extra money. He's the only guy on the list who was probably better as an accountant than in the profession he's best known for. (Tie) Gibby Haynes - lead singer of The Butthole Surfers. He went to Trinity University and earned his degree in accounting. After graduating he worked for over a year at an accounting firm before starting the band. Pepper is one of my favorite songs.

Happy 93rd Birthday to Bob Newhart

American and comedy icon Bob Newhart just turned 93 on Monday. He's a greatly underrated national treasure in my eyes.

He's also the consummate Chicago Cubs fan (great John Belushi story)

Bob Newhart

The man is a comic genius. And an American treasure.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

"It was a damp squib of a fart" is the "It was a dark and stormy night" of intestinal distress stories... To be honest - the only Secretary of Labor I can name off the top of my head is completely fictional... If I were Under Armour now would be a good time to announce that they've signed Buzz Aldrin to a shoe deal... How the Cubs informed Bob Newhart's philosophy on life... So if the Left supports Nike's Kaepernick ad campaign and the Right boycotts Nike - who is the real loser here? Yep - Birkenstock! Too bad they're a private company otherwise you could short their stock... It has now been 4-years years since Kim Kardashian "broke the Internet" but this still makes me laugh every time... Happy 89th birthday to comedy legend Bob Newhart! Here's to many, many more...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Has to be described as one of the worst trades in history. In 2012 the Red Sox traded Theo Epstein to the Cubs for Chris Carpenter. No - not that Chris Carpenter. This Chris Carpenter... Rob Gronkowski needs just 1 more receiving TD to tie Stanley Morgan for the all-time lead in Patriots history. Gronkowski is in just his 7th season with the team. Morgan played 12 seasons with the Pats... Done and done!... I'm still disappointed that "the Junk Mailer" never caught on as a nickname for Brett Favre... If I were President I would make Bobby Orr my Ambassador to Canada. Not kidding. Who can you think of that would be better? And I don't care that he's not a US citizen... Heh heh... My favorite Cubs fan is not Bill Murray - it's Bob Newhart...  Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows... ESPN reports that 11 out of 12 Microsoft tablets the Patriots were using were defective... It might surprise you but I think many more Boston fans are rooting for Terry Francona and the Indians than for Theo Epstein and the Cubs. Me among them...

Top 5 - Famous People who Started as Accountants

One of the more surprising facts about Peter Falk that I learned upon his passing was the fact that before Falk became an actor - he was an accountant. He was an actual CPA. That got me wondering what other famous people were closet accountants? Here is my Top 5 list.

1. Bob Newhart - started out in accounting. This isn't really surprising. Bob is a favorite of mine.

2. Peter Falk - who knew?

3. John Grisham - I think most people knew that the famous novelist was a lawyer but did you know he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Mississippi State University?

Happy 78th birthday to one of the funniest guys who ever lived.
