Quitting the News is the New Quitting Cigarettes

"To be completely cured of newspapers, spend a year reading the previous week's newspapers." Nicolas Nassim Taleb

Interesting post comparing the mental and physical health benefits gained by quitting consuming the news and how it's similar to those of quitting smoking.

And I feel better. Way, way better. It feels like a war that used to be fought in my backyard is now being fought on Neptune instead. I feel relieved of my duty to keep track of the whole world, and now I realize I never had that duty in the first place. My brain got quieter and I started hearing myself think instead of hearing myself worry.

Read the whole thing - some interesting research. Makes me wonder what's worse for American society - all the sugar we consume in our diet - or all the news we consume?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Inflation may actually help the newspaper industry are people start buying papers again just for the coupons to stretch their now shrinking buying power. Just like in the 1970's... CDC investigating reports of 'mild' heart problems in adolescents and teens after Covid vaccine. "The preliminary report by a committee tasked with monitoring vaccine side effects found 62 cases of myocarditis, including two deaths, in people who received the Pfizer vaccine." What would you rather risk - getting a disease which is almost 100% non-fatal to teens and adolescents or risking permanent heart damage? The CDC paused the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for less... God bless Jordan Petersen...  A while ago I predicted some would look for "dating" apps to require vaccination status. That seems to be coming true. I also predicted the next step would be proof of STD and HIV testing. Next up - mandatory 23andMe tests... Adam Vinatieri announced his retirement yesterday. As amazing as his game winning kicks were the thing that stands out for me is the time he freaking ran down Hershel Walker...

Just Saying

If I ran a newspaper – every once and a while I would slip in the phrase “then a man wearing only a Batman cowl and cape jumped out of a closet” into random articles just to see if people were really reading the paper.

I think it would be amusing to be reading about a summit between Trump and Putin or a post game interview of LeBron James and then have that phrase appear for no reason whatsoever.

Maybe it’s just me that would find that to be funny.

Carson King and the Cancel Culture

Carson King became an instant celebrity when he held up a sign asking people to donate to his Busch Light beer fund via Venmo in front of ESPN's College Gameday crowd before the Iowa / Iowa State game.

Carson King became a hero when the amount donated became well in excess of what he'd actually need and he decided to donate the money to Iowa's Childrens Hospital. People appreciated the gesture so much that the amount donated to his Venmo account quickly topped $1 million.

Then Aaron Calvin, a "reporter" for the Des Moines Register tried to harm Carson King's reputation by digging up a couple of stupid Tweets from King from 2012 - when King was just 16-years old.

Carson King was acting from a pureness of heart. Aaron Calvin and the Des Moines Register acted solely out of malice. A malice brought on by the sick "cancel culture" gotcha ethos and lack of common sense. Where were the adults at the newspaper?

There was a backlash.

People were so disgusted by the actions of the paper that the Governor of Iowa honored Carson King for his actions and the amount raised has now topped $2 million for the children's hospital. Meanwhile people looked into Aaron Calvin's social media and found racist and homophobic posts from his past. The Des Moines Register was forced to fired the dick.

So it's a story with a happy ending.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

So what disappointed more people - Season 8 of Game of Thrones or Robert Mueller's testifying before Congress?... Interesting - ESPN's market research shows that 74% of fans don't want to hear about politics on ESPN. That includes avid fans (85%), Republicans (84%), and Democrats (69%). The idea of Go Woke - Go Broke seems to have finally sunk in with upper management...  "To be completely cured of newspapers, spend a year reading the previous week's newspapers." - Nassim Taleb... This may be old news to many but I had no idea that Paul Simon is "the world's biggest prick" and song thief. Probably going to throw out my Graceland CD over this... Wailing Monkey Climbing Tree would be a good name for a heavy metal Barbara Streisand cover band... Democrats may seize upon the idea that President Trump may not be prosecuted for obstruction while in office which may be even more incentive for some to vote him out in 2020. But that logic also means that former President Obama can be prosecuted NOW that he's out of office if he was complicit in illegally spying on the Trump 2016 campaign. You can't have it both ways...

Elon Musk Wants Nothing to do with Gell-Mann Amnesia

“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”
The above quote is from author Michael Crichton and his words really hit home with me. I've been quoted in newspaper stories a number of times and not once have my words or the story been accurate. And my subject matter isn't exactly rocket science.

For Elon Musk he is dealing with rocket science and with electric and self-driving cars. And he has had enough of the media being wrong or being overly sensational.

It's not even the "fake news" that's the real problem in journalism. It's the inaccurate and click-bait news that has eroded the trust the media once had. The "fake news" is just the label that's easily applied to why people no longer believe what they are reading or seeing in news reports. And the journalists and editors have nobody to blame but themselves.

I'd love to see an experiment where a local paper is scrutinized and the subjects of of each article is contacted to see what the paper got wrong about the story in which they were mentioned. What percentage of stories could be found to have "issues"? 50%? More?

Elon Musk is not a media critic as some would have you believe. He's just a really smart man who refuses to be a victim of Gell-Mann Amnesia. You should follow his lead.
