London Calling

This week in 1979 The Clash released their third studio album London Calling. One of the great albums of all-time.

Today also happens to be the 66th birthday of Clash bass player Paul Simonon. It is Simonon who is pictured smashing his bass guitar on the cover of London Calling.

Happy birthday Paul!

The Clash - London Calling

Seemed like a good day to post this. Washington is burning but I live by the river.

Top 5 - New Wave Songs

This is a different type of Top 5 list because these aren't actually my Top 5 New Wave songs. Instead these are the five songs I'd suggest adding to Cultural Offering's New Wave playlist. List in no particular order. Enjoy:

1. Fascination Street - The Cure
2. Straight to Hell - The Clash
3. Hey Saint Peter - Flash N the Pan
4. Bedbugs and Ballyhoo - Echo and the Bunnymen
5. Love Spreads - Stone Roses

These were basically off the top of my head but they are songs I regularly would play on a bar's jukebox. Also not sure if The Clash technically counts as "New Wave" but Combat Rock came out in 1982 so I'm going to count it. There's many, many other songs that could be added. Great period for music.

The Clash

40-years ago yesterday The Clash's self titled debut album was released. White Riot was the first single off the album but for my money Police & Thieves was the better song.

Top 5 - Perfect Albums

Cultural Offering has a list of "Perfect Albums". I agree with most of his selections and the ones where I'm not in 100% agreement is only because the album is new to me (but I'll try to rectify that). That said - here's 5 albums I'd suggest adding to the list:

1. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
2. Live Bullet - Bob Seger
3. Back in Black - AC/DC
4. London Calling- The Clash
5. Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton

Just missing the cut - The J. Geils Band "Live" Full House and the Grosse Pointe Blank Soundtrack (highly recommended but not sure if soundtracks are allowed).

Joe Strummer - RIP

Joe Strummer died 10-years ago today. This video seemed a proper tribute.

Joe Strummer

It's been 9 years to the day since the passing of Joe Strummer. Straight to Hell is one of my favorite Clash songs and this is a pretty solid version.

London Calling - The Clash

It was 30 years ago this month that London Calling from The Clash came out.

I miss Joe Strummer.

Morning Music

Here's this morning's listening (and watching I guess) music selections.

- Peter Gabriel - Here Comes the Flood. One of my favorite songs.

- Eddie Vedder - Guaranteed

- The Shins - Phantom Limb

- The Clash - Radio Clash (live).

- Silver Chair - Straight Lines. This band came out of nowhere with a sound that reminded people of Led Zepplin but now they sound like a less masculine Coldplay. I still like this song though.
