Sad but true - the average Tibetan probably prefers rule by the Chinese over rule by the monks. Tibet is key to China because of the waters from the mountains feed the plains of China. Despite your distaste of the Lama bringing back "Free Tibet" protests could be the extra stick in the eye to China that we could use as a bargaining chip.
