Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Niall Ferguson: Epstein didn't break Keir Starmer, but he did finish him. The American version could be House of Cards II.

- Heh Heh

- Sebastian Junger: The Great Abandonment.

Dunkin' debuts 48 ounce coffee buckets and sells out. Bringing them out in New England in the midst of a blizzard perhaps not the best gage of popularity. Or genius way to insure Dunkin' locations get plowed out as these buckets sure to be big hit with plow drivers.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

On the bright side - there no way I can lose any more money betting on the Celtics this NBA season... A cure for Lyme Disease? Faster please... Dunkin Donuts should counteract all the free advertising Starbucks got this week by hiring Tormund Giantsbane as a spokesman... This article gives a good rundown on most of the questions facing the Celtics this offseason... "Life punishes the vague wish and rewards the specific ask." - Tim Ferriss... This story is sad and uplifting at the same time. God Bless America indeed!... Thinking of changing my religious affiliation from the Flying Spaghetti Monster (blessed be his noodly appendages) to the Church of Tuukka Rask. Go Bruins!...

Dunkin

"I'm going to Dunkin' do you want anything?" That has been such a common question asked in New England for over a decade. We have been shortening the name of Dunkin' Donuts to just "Dunkin" it seems forever.

That's why the news that Dunkin' Donuts is officially shortening their name to just "Dunkin" has been met with a yawn in New England.

It should be noted that the name of the franchise (aside from the spelling of "donut" vs "doughnut") came from their unique traditional plain donut that had a "bump" or "handle" that you could use to hold your donut while you dunked it into your coffee. Hence the name. Just thought that bit of Americana should be mentioned.

The name change that I've been expecting because of the times we live in is for Dunkin to change the name of their "Munchkin" donut holes. I mean society forced the name change of Midget Hockey. Can the name change of these tasty treats be far behind? Think about it - if you had a little person working in your office and you brought in Munchkins from Dunkin's as an office treat on a regular basis - could you be reported to human resources for harassment?

Cops and Dunkin Donuts

I've been meaning to comment on this story about police officers being refused service at a NYC Dunkin Donuts.

The cops are right to boycott the particular Dunkin franchise and the corporate offices are correct in instructing other franchisees not to say a damn thing about the situation because this could quickly turn into Dunkin Donuts' worst nightmare.

The story I've always been told is that in the 1970's Dunkin Donuts started to offer police officers free coffee and donuts because they were always getting robbed. A mostly cash business that was open all sorts of hours was a magnet for junkies and criminals. Then a sudden and increased police presence was a massive deterrent to the idea that a Dunkin's was an easy mark for a quick robbery. Problem solved and all it cost was some coffee and donuts that would have gone bad anyways.

Now if the police start boycotting Dunkin locations because of some douchebag's sense of entitlement - never mind the bad publicity - how soon before the criminals start targeting the locations being boycotted by the police? How quickly do you think cops will be to speed to those locations when the distress calls comes into dispatch?  Once again Dunkin locations become easy marks for quick cash by those desperate for a fix. And how willing would customers feel about going to a place that could be robbed at any time? Revenue and stock prices would plummet.

My guess is all it would take is a couple of pistol whippings before everyone is back to loving seeing the boys in blue pulling up in their squad cars again. Even the entitled douchebags.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Of all the words of tongue and pen / the saddest are / I started the wrong Tight End (lost my Fantasy Football playoff because I started Jordan Reed and his 0 points instead of Cameron Brate and his 13 points)... Heh heh... For the record - despite never using performance enhancing drugs the rumors of such use seem to be keeping me out of the Baseball Hall of Fame... This Dunkin Donuts commercial was pretty funny... Just as a reminder - Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterians... Crap - Batmania is so much cooler than Melbourne...
