Happy Labor Day

I've made this rant for years but Labor Day isn't what it used to be - and for that I blame the teachers' unions. Used to be that Labor Day was both the unofficial end of the summer and the signal to return to school on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Now for years school has started in late August and for what? So teachers could have more "professional days" spread out through the school calendar? The death of the Labor Day traditions and the family bonding they brought is just another examples of how the teachers unions care more about the teachers than they do the children they teach.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Happy Labor Day! When I was a kid Labor Day was the official end of summer and time to go back to school. Now kids have been in school a week already and the significance of Labor Day has been diminished. How ironic that the significance of Labor Day was probably destroyed by a labor union - the Teacher's Union... Speaking of teachers - this time of year you always see stories about teachers who end up spending their own money to buy supplies for their students. How come you never see any stories about salespeople who have to travel for work but can't expense all the drinks they consume? Much of the costs for that alcohol comes straight out of their pockets yet you never see any Go Fund Me pages for people like me. Life is unfair... Two years ago this was the biggest controversy in the country.  Now look where we're at... Some enterprising person at a charity in Buffalo should host the Dildo Throwing World Championships with first prize being two tickets to a Buffalo Bills game. This could expand into a whole Dildo Olympics... I'm an awful person for laughing at this... As an aside - Red Sox fans truly dislike the Yankees but we always respected Mariano Rivera as a player and a person. There's no current Yankees even close to his level now - so the whole team remains unlikeable...

How ironic the the significance of Labor Day was probably destroyed by a labor union - the Teacher's Union... Good advice... If Hillary Clinton was a Harry Potter character - there's no doubt in my mind that she'd be Delores Umbridge...  The modern Bukowski will Tweet his poetry and go unnoticed. As an aside Modern Bukowski would be a good name for a band or fantasy football team name... The answer to why there is crushed stone along railroad tracks. And all this time I thought it was to make it easy for kids to throw rocks at trains... A person at age 20 should read the top 50 classic novels of all-time and repeat the exercise every 10 years for the rest of their life. It's amazing the wisdom that can be gleamed from the same material from different points in your life...

Labor Day Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations on this beautiful Labor Day!

If it was widely known in the NFL that QB Jacoby Brissett was available from the Patriots then Jacksonville should have made the best offer for him. Brissett immediately would be the best QB on their roster... Heh heh this is true!...  If Lonzo Ball doesn't license AC/DC's song Big Balls and alter the lyrics to Big Ballers - he's missing a huge marketing opportunity... Heh heh... It should be noted that if Cleveland called off the trade with the Celtics and Kyrie Irving refused to report to training camp then the Cavaliers would have had ZERO leverage moving forward. They would have had to accepted a deal worth less than half what Boston was offering... Metabolic Cascades of Dysfunction would be a good name for a fantasy football team. It's also a fancy way to say "concussions"... A rant from the past - how the teacher's unions have ruined Labor Day...

Labor Day

Yesterday was Labor Day and it was no big deal. And I think a union is to blame.

It used to be that Memorial Day and Labor Day were the official opening and closing bookends of the summer. This was mainly because these two holidays also bookended the end and beginning of the school year. Not any more. Now school kids regularly go back to school in August a week or two before Labor Day.

This change in schedule had to have been approved by the teachers unions. There's no way school administrators force this change unless it was supported by and who knows maybe even proposed by the teachers' unions. So in essence it was a union that diluted the holiday meant to honor labor.

Yesterday was Labor Day and it was no big deal.

The Death of Labor Day

Growing up Labor Day was the defacto end of Summer. It was the last weekend (and a 3-day weekend at that) before school started and football took precedence in the sports mindset. It was a BIG deal! Now Labor Day is just "meh".

I'm not sure when it happened or even why it happened but across the country schools have thrown away the tradition of Labor Day being the end of summer and the signal for start of school. Now kids are back in school in August. Why? I don't get it. This change has killed Labor Day.

Yesterday I had business on Martha's Vineyard. I was able to get my car on a morning ferry with no reservation. I was set to have to leave my car in Woods Hole and be a pedestrian on the island but no - they had some openings for walk-ups like me. Years ago this would have been impossible.

Driving around the island I saw plenty of free parking spots at the various beaches I drove past (or stopped at for a quick dip in the ocean). Getting a parking spot used to be the biggest hassle. Today on the Friday staring the long Labor Day weekend plenty of free parking was available and the beaches were sparsely populated. And this wasn't due to high gas prices or anything due to the economy. This is because the kids have been back at school for over a week and the idea of a last big weekend of summer has been dulled and deadened by back to school and the responsibilities and activities that go along with that.

The teacher's unions and the education "experts" have killed the traditions of Labor Day and for what? Seriously - tell me what benefit to the kids exists by having an extra week off during the year or ending the school year earlier in June.

Big Labor Day cookouts? Those seem to be significantly down too.

This all struck me as I walked into the famous Black Dog in Vineyard Haven for dinner. Friday night on the start of the long Labor Day weekend and I get seated right away? Don't tell me its gas prices or the economy. The teacher's unions and no respect for tradition school administrators are killing an American institution.

And for what?
