Given how dominating Roy Halladay was last night - I have to wonder if people really should be talking about Johnny Vander Meer and back-to-back no-hitters instead of Don Larsen's World Series perfect game... Report: Moss dissed Belichick on plane back from Miami... I'm not even a Donovan McNabb fan but I wonder what will go down as the bigger NFL mistake - the Eagles picking Kevin Kolb over Donovan McNabb or the Browns drafting Tim Couch over Donovan McNabb?... The movie St Elmo's Fire was based on Tip O'Neil's autobiography - they just changed congressmen into Georgetown college students... Tiger Would Beer, the beer for philanderers... Happy 25th birthday to Tampa Bay Rays' Evan Longoria... Did you know that Dick Vermeil was the first ever Special Teams Coach in NFL history? He became that in 1969 for the Los Angeles Rams. Vermeil has been retired for 5 years now - I hope he makes the Football Hall of Fame. I think it is an honor he deserves... I loved Speed Racer as a kid - I'd really like to own one of these... In the first 10 minutes of the Burn Notice pilot Michael Westen kills 2 guys off-screen. I don't think he killed 2 more people in the next 2 seasons... The Red Sox match up with all of the teams in playoffs really well. Of all the words of tongue and pen - the saddest are it could have been...

Baseball Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous baseball thoughts and observations.
As bad as David Ortiz and JD Drew have been for the Red Sox - Mark Teixeira has been equally bad for the Yankees. By going 1-4 yesterday - Teixeira RAISED his batting average to an even .100... Most recent no-hitters by team. Of all the great Braves pitchers in the 1990's - it was Kent Merker who got their no-no. Not pictured - New York Mets, San Diego and Tampa Bay... Livan Hernandez (2-0) hasn't allowed an earned run in two starts this year for the Nationals. Why can't the Mets get pitchers like that?... Could the Angels be a trade partner for the Red Sox? Brandon Wood has been awful so far this season at 3rd base (hitting just .088) and the Angels could use a guy like Mike Lowell as insurance Wood doesn't completely crap the bed. Plus Lowell could spell Kendry Morales at 1st and Hideki Matsui at DH. The Red Sox probably wouldn't even be compelled to eat as much as Lowell's salary as they would have with the Rangers. Just a thought... The Red Sox have the same record as the Kansas City Royals... Going into yesterday's 20 inning marathon the Mets team ERA was 4.30. After giving up just 1 run in 19 innings their team ERA dropped to 3.63...

Curt Schilling Loses No Hitter With 2 Outs in 9th
Damn! That sucks! However, a one-hitter in a 1-0 game is a great accomplishment. You have to look on the positive side. Ah hell - this is the Red Sox - that means get ready for lots of talk about who is to blame for Schilling not getting his no-no.
Look for talk radio to blame Julio Lugo who had an error. If not for Lugo's error (the reasoning will go) - then Schilling never has to face Shannon Stewart. You can't blame Lugo for the error though. Blaming Lugo would be like blaming me for thinking just before Stewart stepped to the plate in the 9th that Shannon Stewart reminds me a lot of Carl Everett who broke up Mike Mussina's no-hitter bid with 2-outs in the 9th against the Red Sox a couple of years ago.
However, if someone must be blamed. I'm going to blame Yahoo sports. You are not supposed to talk about the no-hitter as it happens and you definitely do not to utter the words "no-hitter." It was kinda amusing to listen to Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo talk around the subject the last couple of innings. No such courtesy at Yahoo sports though. Here is what they were screaming in the box score for the Red Sox / A's game:
