Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Troy Tulowitzki didn't have a HR yesterday? What gives? Was he hurt? (Does Blogger have a sarcasm font?)... I can't help but wonder how often Mark Cuban thinks about letting Steve Nash leave as free agent back in 2004. He must regret the move. I think the Mavericks would have an NBA title by now if Cuban had kept the Dirk Nowitzki / Steve Nash dynamic duo intact. I wonder if in his heart of hearts Cuban thinks the same thing... How bad is it for the Red Sox? Jarrod Saltalamacchia has an OPS+ of 11 - think about that for a second... Regarding the FBI closing down the online poker Big 3 sites I can't help but think of the following quote: “The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly” - Abraham Lincoln. Hopefully this will be the catalyst to finally get a bad law off the books. Poker is part of the American fabric - part of our very soul. It is a travesty that it should be illegal... Is it too early to ask if A-Rod can hit .400 for the season? (Really a sarcasm font would be so helpful.)... You think of Steve Nash as assist guy but he's also just 72 points from passing Pistol Pete Maravich on all-time scoring list... If Alexander Hamilton was alive today - would he be a Mets fan or a Yankees fan?... "Too Big to Fail" would be a good title for an Andre the Giant biography... Carl Crawford's OPS+ is -4. Yup - Crawford in negative numbers. That means the Red Sox would have been better off not having him swing at all like a scared little league player. I'm sure he'll break out of his funk but damn it's been ugly so far...

Some stuff I found interesting and thought worth sharing.

Very sad story about Chad OchoCinco's biggest fan. I liked OchoCinco before reading the article but even more so after reading how he reacted to this situation.

Take a porn star to a hockey game. I think everyone has the same question after reading the ad, "What does that $500 really get you?" Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

The scale of everything. From Quantum foam to the entire universe. Very interesting visual presentation.

Selleck, waterfall, sandwich.

Interesting article on what Frank Serpico is up to now.

Great commercial.

Can the new iPad be used to play online poker? Short answer - not for sites that use Flash and not if you want to multi-table.

Interesting - the deficit based upon which party controls Congress.

Isildur

Isildur was the name of a JRR Tolkien character. Isildur is also the name of the most discussed on-line poker player on the planet today.

In Tolkien lore Isildur was the second King of Gondor and the man who cut the ring of power off the hand of Sauron. Isildur kept the ring of power for himself and that proved to be his undoing.

In poker - Isildur - in a manner of speaking - has taken the aura of power from Tom "Durr" Dwan but whether his undoing is pre-ordained is a subject of disagreement.

Go here to read the background of Isildur's rise to poker prominence.

Go here to read about his latest adventures.

Fascinating stuff.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

One thought on the Tiger Woods accident - it should be noted that Tiger had just spent the past two weeks in Asia. So his internal clock has to be screwed up. That's why I'm not placing too much emphasis on the fact that this accident happened at 2:30 am. As far as his body was concerned it could have been 3:30 in the afternoon (Hong Kong is 11 hours different from EST)... Lego Matrix (I love Lego stuff)... Good news for online poker players.
The U.S. Department of Treasury and Federal Reserve Board anounced (sic) today that the compliance date for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has been extended by six months to June 1, 2010.
That basically means that there is a good chance that an agreement will be reached to both regulate and legalize online poker in the US... TMZ is offering a scenario of what happened with Tiger Woods. Very plausible. I have to admit that I'm kinda bothered by the fact that she never took his last name when they got married. That bugs me - sorry but it does... Tiger Woods related quote of the day, "Bigamy is having one wife too many. Monogamy is the same." - Oscar Wilde... Patton Oswald and the Christmas shoes. Very funny stuff (NSFW language)... 88 days till pitchers and catchers report...

AJ Benza Fired as Host of High Stakes Poker

AJ Benza has been fired as co-host of High Stakes Poker. This is a bad move by the Game Show Network. Benza has good chemistry with Gabe Kaplan and has also earned lots of viewer goodwill over his 5-seasons of co-hosting.

Since Benza is a relatively unknown outside of his work on the show and has even offered to accept a pay-cut I don't think this move was financial in nature. I would guess his departure is due to one of these two reasons:

1. Just a plain stupid move by the GSN executives.

2. A power play by Poker Stars trying to insert one of their pro players as co-host as a way to turn the show into a defacto hour long Poker Stars infomercial.

Absolute Poker

There is a storm of controversy surrounding the poker site Absolute Poker over charges of on-line cheating.

This to me seems the best explanation / hypothesis of what occurred. I disagree with one aspect though. "Dan Druff" thinks it was one person who just got greedy. I think the easier explanation is two people - one person who set up the scheme and a second person who did not fully understand the ins and outs but who got greedy and blew the whole deal.

For example, I can imagine a husband / wife team or a boyfriend / girlfriend where the geek husband / boyfriend set up this whole scheme as a way to get some extra money and keep the wife / girlfriend happy. The wife / girlfriend learns what the husband / boyfriend is doing and starts to think that he's acting too small. When the husband / boyfriend is not around the wife / girlfriend gets greedy and careless and blows the whole operation. The wife / girlfriend thought they were about to win lots of money but all they did was get the account frozen and the cheat exposed.
