Last week USC and UCLA shocked the college football world by announcing they were joining the Big 10. Having had some time to digest the news - here's a couple of observations.
First, when there were no NFL teams in Los Angeles - college football was king. Especially with Pete Carroll's USC championship teams. Now LA has both the Rams and Chargers and overall interest in college football is on the wane. LA in a couple of years will be similar to Boston where no matter how good BC is the interest is minimal compared to the Patriots. Guessing it will take less than 8-years.
Adding USC and UCLA is a big win for the Big 10. The Midwest teams and their fans get to go to sunny California as basically the equivalent of an extra bowl game vacation a year. Also a big win for Big 10 recruiting, as these teams get an extra in with Southern Cal recruits. Will be especially important if, as I predicted, the local LA teams go on a downward spiral.
Excellent observation from IowaHawk - the new footprints of the Big 10 and the SEC do match up with the Free and Slave States just prior to the Civil War. Just like the Gypsy woman said it would.

The Big 10 is looking at starting football around Thanksgiving. The cynic in me wonders why football suddenly becomes OK only after the election. The pragmatist in me says the Big 10 will be viewed as a JV conference for decades to come... "Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision." - Peter Drucker... The theme song to Ironsides makes a great ringtone for calls from the wife (saying maybe just the first few seconds)... Living life without commercials will make it so much easier for many to live without broadcast TV live sports. One of the reasons all sports TV ratings are going down. You can thank incessant GEICO and Progressive commercials for that... Hot Milk would be a great name for an LDS punk band... Maybe the act of innovation itself is a rebellion against God and the perceived natural order of things (why yes I did just start reading Matt Ridley's latest book)...
President Trump coming out and Tweeting in favor of the Big 10 playing football this fall is a perfect example of what Scott Adams calls "free money." Here's an issue that has wide support in battleground states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan that was just waiting for someone to pick up that associated support. Trump is grabbing that free money with both hands and good for him.
On the other side of the issue are the Big 10 university Presidents and Big 10 Commissioner Kevin Warren. The university Presidents voted in secret to shut down football this fall and Kevin Warren is in his first year on the job. Trump is going to steamroll them when it comes to public opinion polls on this issue.
In Ohio the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Cleveland Browns all will be playing football. But not Ohio State because of the Big 10 vote.
Free money.

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
You'd have to pay me big money to watch the DNC's virtual convention but I am curious if either immigration or gun control gets mentioned. Those were two of the top issues when the primaries began just a year ago. Remember "open borders" and Beto O'Rourke bragging he was going to take your guns? I wonder what happened?... Prerecorded laugh track still doesn't laugh at Amy Schumer special. Long held the belief that Schumer's first special was only good because Anthony Jeselnik was writing or polishing her jokes... Interesting look at whether college football players could unionize or form a trade association. Disappointed that NIL (name, image and likeness) issues weren't discussed. It seems to me the best path forward would be a trade association that leverages NIL for the benefit of the players. The trade association could insist that players from other schools could not appear together in advertisements only if both players were members of the trade association. Could you imagine how eager a car dealership in Kentucky would be to pay the top recruit from Louisville and the U of Kentucky to appear in a commercial together? Or the QB's at USC and UCLA to appear in a local clothing store advertisement? That's the players' real leverage... Speaking of Beto O'Rourke - I wonder if he was even invited to the DNC... And speaking of college football - interesting article from Pat Forde. I wasn't aware the the vote (or lack thereof) of Big 10 University Presidents was never made public. Pretty sure that's because most University Presidents know that if it became public that they voted to not have football this fall the hate towards them wouldn't stop until that President was out of a job come spring...
