Charles Bronson

Charles Bronson would have turned 101-years old yesterday. Here's my top 5 for Bronson's movies:

1. Hard Times
2. Death Wish
3. Breakheart Pass
4. Once Upon a Time in The West
5. (tie) The Magnificent Seven (tie) The Great Escape (tie) The Dirty Dozen

I put those last three movies in a tie because while they are all classic movies - they are ensemble movies where Bronson was not the true lead actor. Just missing the list was Mr. Majestyk (one of my favorites).

When I was a kid one of the arguments I remember having with my friends is who would win a fight between Charles Bronson and Bruce Lee. I'm still picking Charles Bronson.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Pretty sure Mark Zuckerberg's endgame is to run for President. That's what the flag waving, wake boarding 4th of July video was all about. Think of it as a trial balloon... Growing up this is what a manly man looked like. I have no idea what kids consider manly these days but pretty sure Charles Bronson could kick their ass... 75-years ago the pinnacle of science was the splitting of the atom. Perhaps 75-years hence the pinnacle will be the splitting of the electron... My fear is when Mark Zuckerberg learns via an aborted run for President that he's perhaps the least liked person in the USA that he becomes a real-life Bond villain. The odds are so much greater that he becomes a Bond villain than the President... From now on when I want anyone to shut up I'm going to say, "Thank you. THANK YOU!" like the chair during the Wimbledon's men's final on Sunday. Conversation you're not interested in having, "Thank you. THANK YOU!" Girlfriend complaining about your driving, "Thank you. THANK YOU!" It actually works great...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Interesting insights into Xi Jinping and the workings of Communist China. The article states that "propaganda is the 'lifeblood' of the party state" which to me just seems evil. The author also seems a fan of Xi Jinping because (in my words) "he gets the trains to run on time." It is important to understand the arguments of the other side - but the arguments presented here are filled with obvious holes and inconsistencies.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Kent Brockman is perhaps the most respected name in journalism these days. I'm only half-kidding about this...  Kennedy in a Hat would be a good name for a band... This may be true of a Southern woman but if a guy from New England tells you "Keep talking" he means if you don't shut your yap you're going to catch a beating... The word "panned" comes from the French word for "breakdowns." So in essence when a movie is "panned" by critics it is usually because it "breaks down" and things don't work... WTF? Seriously - WTF?... "Charles Bronson was an aircraft gunner" is both a true statement (he flew on 25 B-29 bomber missions in WW II) and something which would make a great song lyric... Just a reminder - starting this February dissent is no longer the highest form of patriotism (and the homeless will mysteriously vanish from any and all news reports)... If "evade" means to escape - shouldn't "vade" mean to get caught?...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- People with Green Cards should not be prevented from re-entering the country. That said - I'm not worked up over the so-called "Muslim ban". Mostly because of this.

- The real reason Brent Musberger is retiring is because the body count from the Brent Musberger Drinking Game was getting too high.

- 9 facts about Charles Bronson. I love the anecdote about accepting the Death Wish role.

- The protesters are doing more harm than good to the Democrats. Listen to the people cheering the police in deep-blue Portland.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Happy 60th birthday to Dwight Evans. The 8-time Gold Glove winning Dewey should have gotten much more Hall of Fame consideration then he got... Promising Assistant GM's want nothing to do with the Orioles - that's why it could be opportunity for someone like Dan Duquette who once was a big deal but now has trouble even getting interviews... Best part about the Baseball-reference.com front page update is the disclaimer... So was real reason Herman Cain chief of staff Mark Block was smoking that cigarette in that commercial post coital related?... Today would have been Charles Bronson's 90th birthday. In his dreams Chuck Norris wishes he'd be as badass as Charles Bronson... Big Adrian Gonzalez fan and big Red Sox fan but Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers should have won Silver Slugger for 1st base... Awesome beer map... On this day in 1913 the US introduced the income tax. A day that will live in infamy... Yesterday was Palindrome Day (11/02/2011) and I just wanted to note that best palindrome ever is "Lisa Bonet ate no basil"... 10 Retro Illustrations of Pop Culture Icons... Today is Michael Dukakis' 78th birthday. Funny how you never hear anyone wistfully thinking of how great a Dukakis Presidency would have been.
