Dick Cheney on George H. W. Bush

Recently came across this quote from Dick Cheney regarding President George H.W. Bush:
If you were to go out and design a President to be Commander in Chief in a crisis like Desert Storm, you couldn’t do any better than what we had with George Bush. In terms of his experiences, combat pilot in World War II, UN [United Nations], China, CIA, Vice President. He was a delight to work for in that regard. So a lot of what followed after that, whatever successes we enjoyed and so forth, you have to start with the man.
I thought that was worth pondering.

Who is in Charge?

The RNC has the above new video The Bystander in Chief. It does make you wonder. When Seal Team 6 was about to take down Osama bin Laden there was a famous photo of Obama in the situation room. Then it came out that he was so disengaged that he had to leave to play cards. The scary thing is the question "Who is in charge?" is now a legitimate issue.

I remember when George W Bush was President some people intimated that it was really VP Dick Cheney running things behind the scenes. Even with Obama so disengaged - NOBODY is suggesting it is actually VP Joe Biden pulling the strings. In fact Biden is the Where's Waldo of Vice Presidents. Who is in charge?

Some people are now coming around to the fact that Obama is a bad manager. My fear is that it will be revealed that it's not that he's a bad manager or disengaged  - its that he's a real life Chance the Gardner.

James Cameron into the Abyss

The news of James Cameron reaching the bottom of the Marianas Trench - the deepest point in the oceans and thus the deepest part of the Earth - was woefully under-reported. I'm not saying that this is of landing on the moon significant but you would think this achievement in man's exploration of the planet would get more attention than a Jennifer Lopez nipple slip.

Here's a very well done discussion of what Cameron's achievement means.

If you think of it - over the weekend Cameron reached the deepest point on Earth and Dick Cheney the former Vice President had a heart transplant. News of both was greeted with almost a ho-humm reaction. News of Chaney getting a heart transplant was news because of who was getting the transplant (and the opportunity for some to break out more Dick Chaney has not heart jokes) not because of the awe of how far modern medical science has come. Likewise - would reaching the bottom of the Marianas Trench have been reported if it wasn't Jim Cameron piloting the vessel? People have become too jaded and apathetic when it comes to technological achievement. The achievement itself should be the news - not the celebrity level involved.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Just saying but it has been over a month since Philly sportswriter Bill Conlin was accused of being a serial child molester but the story has completely dropped off the radar. That seems strange to me. Some would say that since there has been no court action there is nothing to report. Others would say that this is too close to home and too difficult for journalists to cover properly. I think that this is a cross between sportswriters wanting to wish it away and a situation similar to how cops don't write tickets on other cops... Heh heh - BetOnline calls Birdman's bluff on $5 million bet on the Super Bowl. The prop bets are awesome... If the only prerequisite for high political office was superior debating skills - Christopher Hitchens would have been Prime Minister of Britain... Happy 71st birthday to former Vice President Dick Cheney a man whose contributions to the United States have been woefully under-appreciated... Some smokers protect their pack of cigarettes in their hand the way others protect their smart phones. I guess different people have different priorities... Joe Scarborough remembers Newt Gingrich in Congress. I love the Steve Largent story... In the old days $6 million would get you a cyborg ex-astronaut superhero. Today that sort of cash only gets you Marco Scutaro...  Today is Christian Bale's 38th birthday which just serves as a reminder how much I want to see the next Batman installment - The Dark Knight Rises

Dick Cheney's Blood Clot

The news that Dick Cheney has a blood clot in his leg has been greeted in some circles with a certain amount morbid glee. On some Internet chat boards people are actively rooting for the clot. These people should be careful for what they wish for.

If for whatever reason - Dick Cheney had to step down as Vice President - then the replacement immediately becomes the front-runner for election in 2008.

If Cheney stepped down and Condoleeza Rice took his place - then she would immediately shoot to the top of the polls. Hillary would lose a good deal of her base (women and blacks) to Condoleeza and Barack Obama's resume would pale in comparison to Rice's accomplishments.

Can you imagine the boost Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney would get if Bush named them to be VP for the rest of the term?

I've said it before that things are getting better in Iraq and if things continue to improve by 2008 - then the Democrats are going to have to find a new campaign topic to base their stump speeches on. If things keep getting better - then whoever takes Cheney's spot would be in position to glom on to all the glory.

Rabid Democrats should pray that Cheney finishes the term as VP.
