- IRS doubles down on taxing FanDuel, DraftKings as gambling. I can see both sides. The DFS sites say it's a game of skill but so is poker and I would consider playing poker for money to be gambling.
- Revisiting the New Romantics. Interesting (but overblown) look lack at the music of the early 1980's. Know the article is Brit-centric but the ultimate art school band from this period was Talking Heads who literally formed at the Rhode Island School of Design.
- If Trump is re-elected, could Oregon be headed for a crack-up? If Oregon breaks into two then California probably won't be far behind.

Tom Brady is on pace for 37 TD passes this season. The Tampa Bay season record is 33. He seems like a good pick-up for the Buccaneers... No matter how many times I see this it gets me every time. What a true hero looks like... At this point CNN is just a Benny Hill theme song away from being a satire sitcom... Disappointed that calling Ben Roethlisberger "fat Thor" hasn't caught on. With the beard and beer gut the nickname certainly fits... I'm an awful person for re-posting this... Still say that Memento Mori would be a great name for a life insurance company... Little known fact but Pittsburgh, PA is a "Sister City" to Wuhan China. Just another reason to dislike the Steelers... The Jeffrey Toobin defense...

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
Was surprised by Rob Gronkowski deciding to come back to play football. Thought he was enjoying retirement. Was not surprised that he'd only come back to play with Tom Brady. The TV ratings for Tampa Bay games in New England this season will be phenomenal... Why Oil Prices Went Negative - a good explainer article on why and how oil prices went negative. Something I was very nervous about.. Are we all in agreement that NYC has the worst mayor in the country and Michigan has the worst governor?... I was not aware that Al Bumbry served 11 months in Vietnam before becoming a star for the Baltimore Orioles. He even earned a Bronze Star for bravery... "The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance - it is the illusion of knowledge."- Daniel Boorstin... Missouri files suit against China over damages from Wuhan Virus. I expect many other States to follow suit [pun intended]. It will also be interesting to see which major law firms sign on to defend the Chinese government...

I think one change that should be mandated across the country is to change all the signs that hang in bathrooms from "Employees must wash hands before to returning to work" to "Everyone must wash hands before leaving bathroom." Sad that we even need signs for basic hygiene... David Simon is my spirit animal... Proposed solution to help out restaurants and bars being stressed by Wuhan Virus closings - have States waive all 2020 sales and meal taxes so that bars and restaurants get an immediate cash cushion to help them through. If taxes have already been paid have State departments of revenue issue refund checks. Simple and elegant way to help out... The Red Sox unofficial team song s Shipping up to Boston, the Patriots song is Ozzy Ozbourne's Crazy Train, and the Bruins is Zombie Nation. May I suggest with the signing of Tom Brady that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers adopt the Grateful Dead's Touch of Gray as their unofficial theme song (Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better would also work but too mellow)... Proposed NCAA punishment for Rick Pitino for the wrong doings at Louisville that happened under his watch - require him to grow and maintain a Jeff Ruland mustache for as long as he's head coach of Iona... Who knew? Apparently among the new golf etiquette rules in the face of the Wuhan virus is to leave the flag in while putting so nobody has to touch the pin...

Tom Brady
Looks like TB12 will be taking his considerable talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Like most New England fans, I wish him nothing but the best. The Buccaneers franchise single season records for TD passes is 33 and 5,109 passing yards were set last season by Jameis Winston - I wouldn't bet against Brady breaking both of those marks this season. Never bet against Tom Brady.
Why did Brady leave the Patriots? Was it because he wasn't offered a contract? Did he not want to fall for telling Bill Belichick what he wanted in a contract because of a fear of the counter-offer being insulting in his eyes? Or did he just want a change? A new challenge? No matter the reason I'll be rooting for him. And like many Patriots fans I'll be watching as many Tampa Bay games as possible this year.
I'm grateful for what Tom Brady has done for New England. And not just on the football field. He's always been pure class. We love you Tom Brady.

Gruden Fired
Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden and GM Bruce Allen have been fired. This leads to three immediate questions.
1. Why was Gruden fired? I think it was a combination of things. Gruden was supposed to be an offensive genius but the offense in Tampa Bay has not really done anything under his leadership. The argument can be made that Gruden did what he could with the players he was given which is why Bruce Allen also got the axe. I can't help but think that Brian Billick was also supposed to be an offensive genius when he took the Baltimore job after leading Minnesota to huge points totals as offensive coordinator. Like Billick - Gruden's success was due more to a suffocating defense than anything the "genius" did with the offense. Like Billick - Gruden won a Super Bowl but then his act grew tiresome. Both were fired 7 seasons after winning the ultimate prize. Billick was 60-52 after winning the Super Bowl for the Ravens while Gruden was 45-51 after beating Oakland in the Super Bowl. With Monte Kiffin the leader of the Bucs defense moving on to coach with his son at Tennessee - it was time for a change.
2. Where will Gruden coach next? Brian Billick still hasn't gotten a job since being let go by Baltimore. I wonder if the same fate is in store for Gruden? Gruden has a couple more years on his contract so it would make sense for him to hang loose for a while and maybe sit out a year as a TV analyst (his Chucky shtick should be amusing for 15 minutes or so). Gruden's name will be attached to any current opening and also to many major college openings starting next season. Personally - I'm not sold on Gruden as a coach. He seem to generate more light than heat.
3. Who will replace Gruden? My guess is Bill Cowher. It is said that Cowher's big issue with the Jets job was not being able to name his own GM / personnel director to work with. With Bruce Allen out of the way - the GM job is open.
