Today in History
Today is the anniversary of Robert E. Lee surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in 1865. One of the most important dates in US history goes by with little or no mention and we wonder why kids today seem so uninformed.
Grant wore his uniform but was not his dress uniform. Lee made sure he was all prim and proper. If I recall correctly the ceremonial surrender of Lee's sword was handled by Col Joshua Chamberlain of Little Round Top fame - Maine's finest son.
Lee was in his full uniform, Grant didn't wear his full uniform as he was in a hurry to meet Lee. Custer rode off with that table as I recall.
