The Innocents Abroad

"All my malicious instincts were dead within me; and as America faded out of sight, I think a spirit of charity rose up in their place that was as boundless, for the time being, as the broad ocean that was heaving its billows about us. I wished to express my feelings - I wished to lift up my voice and sing, but I did not know anything to sing, so I was obliged to give up the idea. It was no loss to the ship though, perhaps." - Mark Twain

Just started reading Mark Twain's satirical travelogue of this "picnic" cruise to Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land. Shamed to admit that I'm not very well versed in Twain's work and thought this book might help remedy that and make fine beach reading.

“Roughing It” is mandatory Mark Twain. For a quick intro chapter from it, Google “Dick Baker’s Cat”.

  3. We read Innocents Abroad in High School as I recall. I vividly remember Twain's comment about "liesurely pelting nearby whales with their empty beer bottles" I will have to reread this one.
