Who knew? A maverick was a name given to cattle found on the plains that bore no brand of ownership. They got their name from Samuel A. Maverick (1803-1870) a Texas rancher who, for whatever reason, did not brand his calves. Kind of fits since nobody owned Tom Cruise in Top Gun - he was his own man.
