Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

"Solomon Grundy sober on Monday. Drunk on Tuesday." Hi Solomon... Who knew? Erwin Schrodinger didn't even own a cat... Do Jewish vampires avoid Stars of David the way goy vampires avoid crosses?... Still say that James Joyce's Ulysses should be renamed Fear and Loathing in Dublin... In AC/DC's classic song Whole Lotta Rosie released in 1977 Rosie weighed 19 stone which is 266 pounds. Rosie was probably fairly unique for her weight back then but today - not so much. That isn't progress... Wouldn't Billy Gates Gruff be a good title for the story of Microsoft's rise to power?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Is it messed up that most of our politicians have higher negative polling ratings than positive ratings? Or is even more messed up that we even have those polls to begin with? Don't think Thanos ever paid attention to polls... As an aside the political leadership on both sides of the aisle really don't have a lot of sex appeal. Nancy Pelosi? Mitch McConnell? Please. Tulsi Gabbard 2024...  As a reminder March 1st is officially recognized in New England as the date many men of all ages put away their long pants for the winter (seriously - go into any bar in New England and see the variety of guys showing off their pasty white calves)... I have decided that I can use the phrase "back when I was growing up" to refer to any event that happened before yesterday... Did you know the scientific term "quarks" (a type of subatomic particle) was taken from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

My favorite thing about 16 seed UMBC's upset over number 1 seed Virginia is the fact that to most people Stringer Bell from The Wire is UMBC's most famous alumni... Heh heh... This is tangentially Irish but did you know the scientific term "quarks" (a type of subatomic particle) was taken from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake?... So beautiful (Keukenhof, Holland)... Danny Woodhead has announced his retirement from the NFL. He was one of the easiest people to root for in the past decade... Opening Day is fast approaching. We are that much closer to the dulcet tones of Carl Ripken Jr. calling baseball games... Was on a recent JetBlue flight where they had to shut down the entire plane prior to take-off to reboot the plane's computer system. Guy next to me commented "I guess CTRL ALT DEL didn't work"...

Top 5 - Literary Masterpieces I Can't Read

Today is Don DeLillo's birthday (he turned 71 today). His birthday is another reminder of how I've never been able to make it through his masterpiece Underworld. I've picked the book up several times but around page 100 I just lose interest. No matter how many people tell me how great the book is - I just can't finish it. There are a number of "great" books that fit this description. here are the top 5 masterpieces that I either can't finish or have no interest in starting.

1. James Joyce Ulysses - I seem to pick this book up every year and make it to about page 100
2. John Steinbeck The Grapes of Wrath (Centennial Edition) - I re-read Cannery Row every summer but can't get interested in the Grapes.
3. Somerset Maugham Of Human Bondage (Signet Classics) - I've read just about everything else by Maugham but I can't finish this book
4. Don DeLillo Underworld: A Novel
5. Norman Mailer The Executioner's Song

Boomsday

Today marks the secular holiday known as Bloomsday. To celebrate the day - I will A: go out and drink as much Guinness as possible and B: I will once again try to tackle James Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses.

Wish me luck on both endevours.
