LOTR and The Hobbit Movie and Gaming Rights Up for Sale

Interesting but a bit hard to follow story on the movie and gaming rights for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit going up for auction.

Are we nearing a point where the LOTR "universe" gets over-exposed and over-saturated? Big Tolkien fan but I didn't even bother seeing the recent Peter Jackson Hobbit trilogy. Will probably check out the upcoming Amazon series but the source material - the books - are always so much better.

Having said the above - I would be curious what a Pixar adaptation of LOTR would look like. Especially if it could be a series that didn't need to be cut for time.

Happy Hobbit Day

Today is the birthdays of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and is celebrated internationally as Hobbit Day.

Be sure to have a second breakfast and maybe a pint or two to celebrate!

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Donald Trump's rally in Massachusetts made me think of this.

- Heh heh - don't do drugs

- Still one of my favorite commercials

- Cool - you can own your own personal hobbit hole

- I have nothing to add either. Picture says it all.

- 2015 Outdoor Photographer of the year photos

- Cargill fires 200 Muslim workers over prayer dispute. A business is a business first. Also pretty sure those jobs were filled pretty quickly.

- Are we sure this isn't a Craig's List ad? "Anybody butt rump?" could be some kinky butt stuff.

Interesting Viewpoint on The Hobbit

Very interesting look at The Hobbit. Must reading for any JRR Tolkien geeks.

The idea that Gandalf was interested in the quest of the dwarfs mainly to rid Middle Earth of Smaug before the coming war with Sauron is interesting. Wonder if Tolkien even thought of that aspect?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Love learning new words. Some of these I knew but others I will try to add to my vocabulary... Saw The Hobbit on opening night. Three things you should know: 1. the book is being broken into two movies which is OK because Tolkein packed a lot of action into that book, 2. the movie is close to 3 hours long (go to the bathroom before the movie!) and 3. some changes were made from the book - how you view these changes will affect how you feel about the movie... O Chemistree, O Chemistree... If you replace the word "ham" with the word "condoms" then Green Eggs and Ham becomes a very strange gay cruising book... Here's a geeky question that bothers me - if you poked out one of Wolverine's eyes would it grow back?... Here's a geeky joke to go with that geeky question: Two chemists walk into a bar - the first orders H2O, the second orders H2O too. The second chemists dies... As a reminder Rex Ryan needs to win the last game of the season to equal Herm Edwards 4-year record with the Jets. If anyone out there still thinks Ryan should keep his job - let that stat sink in...

The Hobbit

Before The Lord of the Rings came The Hobbit. JRR Tolkien wrote The Hobbit first and when I was a kid - I read The Hobbit first before becoming enchanted with The Lord of the Rings. The funny thing is over the years I've gone back and re-read The Lord of the Rings a number of times but never The Hobbit.

I don't know if over the years I was thinking of The Hobbit as just a children's tale or somehow an unworthy predecessor to The Lord of the Rings but I just never picked the book back up. However, recently I was sitting at my desk and as I looked into one of my bookcases - I saw the book The Hobbit and the urge to read it again struck me.

I'm glad it did.

It is a very entertaining book. And very fast paced (especially when compared to The Lord of the Rings). In the first chapter the reader is introduced to hobbits, dwarves and wizards. Then in the second chapter trolls enter the tale, in the third elves, in the fourth goblins, in the fifth Gollum and his magic ring, in the sixth the Wargs (evil wolves) and giant eagles, in the seventh Beorn (who can change himself into a giant bear), in the eighth giant spiders, in the ninth Wood-elves, and then in the twelfth chapter Smaug the dragon. Bang, bang bang.

A very quick (about 300 pages) and very fun read. If you haven't picked up the book since you were a kid - do yourself a favor and pick the The Hobbit once again. It makes excellent summer reading.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Apropos of nothing a lefty comparison - before he was 26-yrs old Tom Glavine had 53 wins and had won a Cy Young Award. Jon Lester has 39 wins and has beat cancer... Good news for geeks - the lawsuit between the Tolkien Trust and New Line Cinema is over. This clears the way for The Hobbit to be made into a movie by Warner Brothers... Today should be called naming day in the US. In 1776 the Continental Congress officially adopted the name "the United States" as the name for the new country. Twenty five years later in 1791 - the capital of the new country was officially named Washington... If before the season you told Mariner fans that this late in the season their team would have the same record as Tampa Bay - they would have been happy. Funny - they don't seem happy... This is pretty cool - the Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Choir singing Sweet Home Alabama... Today is Red Sox prospect Michael Bowden's 23rd birthday. Bowden is the 2nd best prospect in the Red Sox organization according to Baseball America (behind Lars Anderson) but just the 83rd best prospect in baseball (also according to Baseball America)...
